Specialist Community Public Health (SCPHN) Programme Health Visiting & School Nursing

Qualified registered nurses or midwives are invited to apply to undertake the Specialist Community Public Health (SCPHN) Programme, you will gain a Specialist Public Health Nursing Qualification in Health Visiting or School Nursing and you will be joining a service that is both forward thinking and innovative with a strong commitment to training.

We are looking for registered Nurses or Midwives who are innovative, motivated, and enthusiastic about the public health agenda. You will require a think family approach and have a desire to improve health outcomes for children, families, and young people in Devon.

You will be given 12-month fixed term contract, Agenda for Change Band 5 to undertake a PGDip Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Course (Health Visitor or School Nursing) at the University of West of England. The 52-week programme commences September 2024 and is completed September 2025 consisting of academic study and clinical placement within a Healthy Child Programme 0-19 locality team in various settings across Devon including Northern, Southern, and Eastern area.

Note we are not currently recruiting for trainee school nurses in the Exeter area. You will be allocated a Supervisor and Assessor who will offer support and guidance in achieving learning outcomes for practice.

Main duties of the job

Under the supervision of the SCPHN Practice Teacher/Mentor, contribute to the assessment of health needs and formulation of care plans for children, young people their families and communities, this includes the implementation of programmes of care, offering support and advice to parents and families in the home, clinic, school or community setting i.e. parenting skills, public health, group work and community clinics.

Under the direction of the SCPHN Practice Teacher/Mentor offer advice and support to children, families and adults in accordance with evidence based practice.

Under the direction of the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse completing the Early Help Assessment (EHA), work with the multi-agency team in supporting children in need and those at risk of significant harm, including participating in case conferences and other meetings and writing reports where appropriate.

In collaboration with the Public Health Nursing team, identify individuals and groups within the community where integrated working and advice would benefit the interests of public health and promote healthy living, in particular seeking to identify disadvantaged groups and address health inequality.

Discuss clinical measurements outside normal expectations with others to help with the planning of the appropriate monitoring of referrals.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Registered Nurse or Midwife at Diploma level (120 CAT points) with evidence of continuing professional development.

Experience

Essential

Knowledge of National and local policy in Childrens Service and of the Public Health agenda.
Ability to apply theory to practice.
Delivery of evidence based practice.
Child Protection awareness.
Knowledge and application of clinical governance.

Desirable

Experience of working with Public Health activities.
Experience of teaching or mentorship.
Experience of working within a community setting.
Experience in assessment of health needs, evaluation and action planning.
Ability to understand and implement LSCB safeguarding guidelines and their importance in safeguarding children.
