Job summary
An
exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Yorkshire
trainee paediatrician (ST4 or above) with an interest in leadership and
management to join Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Childrens Hospital as
the Chief Paediatric Registrar for a period of 12 months commencing September
2024.
The
Chief Paediatric Registrar role builds on the Royal College of Physicians (RCP)
programme already running in the Trust. It will provide higher specialty
trainees with the opportunity to develop valuable skills in leadership and
management and gives them 40% protected time to put these skills into practice
by developing initiatives that address local challenges.
Chief
Registrars have a tangible impact on service improvement, workforce
transformation, engagement and morale, and education and training, and work to
deliver better outcomes for patients, colleagues and organisations, supporting
to build a profile that marks them out as a future clinical leader.
Main duties of the job
The
Chief Paediatric Registrars role will include:
Co-chair the Junior Doctor Forum in Leeds Childrens Hospital aiming to improve
trainee morale, training and education.
Work in collaboration with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Clinical
Leadership Fellows.
Working with the Paediatric Sim Fellows to help establish regular simulation
across the Childrens Hospital.
Provide a bridge between senior clinical leaders, managers and the wider
trainee workforce to improve communication, engagement and morale.
Service improvement, for example redesigning pathways, implementing new
technology and establishing new services to improve flow and outcomes for
patients.
Improving the quality of clinical and non-clinical education and training
activities, and supporting/mentoring other trainees to engage in quality
improvement.
Involvement in workforce planning and improving the deployment of trainees to
meet service needs and improve morale.
Improving efficiency and reducing waste.
Working across teams and boundaries to engage stakeholders in quality
improvement and influence change.

About us
The
Leeds Childrens Hospital has an annual budget of £103 million, inpatient bed
base of 286 beds, and delivers 102,000 outpatient appointments and 20,000
inpatient and day case episodes. The majority of which is on the Leeds General
Infirmary site, however there is a Neonatal unit based on the St James
Hospital site. The Leeds Childrens Hospital employs a total of 116 consultants
providing general, specialist and supra-regional childrens medical and
surgical services. Inpatient, day case and outpatient services are mainly
provided at the LGI.

This
is a fixed-term role for 12 months. The role can be undertaken in programme or
out of programme (training or experience). Due to the 2 day/week leadership
commitment, this post will extend the trainees completion of training (CCT)
date and this should be discussed with the trainees educational supervisor and
training programme director.

CONDITIONS
OF SERVICE
This

The
post holder is required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council
(GMC) and hold a licence to practice.
Standards
of Conduct and Behaviour
You
are required to work to the standards set out by the General Medical Council in
Good Medical Practice. This includes protecting patients when you believe that
a doctors or other colleagues conduct, performance or health is a threat to
them. If, after establishing the facts, it is necessary, you must follow the
Trusts procedures in this matter and inform your Clinical Director or Medical
Director in the first instance.
The

Leave
Arrangements
All
leave should be applied for in accordance with the Trusts Leave Policy,
normally giving six weeks notice of any leave, other than in exceptional
circumstances.
Training
The
jobholder must take responsibility in agreement with his/her line manager for
his/her own personal development by ensuring that Continuous Professional
Development remains a priority. The jobholder will undertake all mandatory
training required for the role.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Paediatric Speciality trainee doctor ST4 level or above at the time of commencement of post
- Must have completed RCPCH membership exams at the time of application
- Outcome 1 at last ARCP
Experience
Essential
- Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
- At least 4 years experience in paediatrics by the time of intended start date
Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills

- Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Advanced Paediatric Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
