About the post

We are looking for a salaried GP with a view to partnership to join our practice for 5-6 general sessions a week delivered over our two sites in Kenton and Benwell respectively. The work timetable needs to include full days on Thursdays and Fridays with on-call as per Rota.

The start and finish times of the surgeries can be flexible and will include clinical admin time as well as protected time for supervision of the medical students if necessary. The role will also include up to 2 lunchtime house calls. The On-Call commitment is calculated pro rata and includes any late house call requests until 6 pm.

We offer a competitive salary (both experience and qualifications will be considered), indemnity paid (in addition to salary) and 6 weeks annual leave. We operate a standard BMA contract which includes protected CPD time pro rata.

We encourage professional development with courses and specialist interests and we would also expect involvement with the Care Home Ward Rounds when it is required. The new GP also be considered for a Partnership after a period of successful mutual assessment.

Ideally, we would like the new GP to start in the next 3-4 months, but we are prepared to wait for the right candidate.

About us

Betts Avenue is a long-established GP Practice operating in the heart of Newcastle over two sites (Kenton and Benwell).

We are a team of 3 GP Partners supported by an established Clinical team (2 long-term locum GPs, 1 Advanced Care Practitioner, 1 senior Advanced Nurse Practitioner, 2 Practice Nurses, 2 Student nurses/HCAs as well as an experienced management and admin team. We deliver a range of GMS services to a population of approximately 11,000 patients. We have invaluable support from Care-Coordinators, Pharmacy Hub and PCN pharmacists, our own Practice Pharmacists, Diabetes Dietitian, Mental Health co-ordinator for Adults, Mental Health practitioner for Children and Young People, Paramedics who help us with the house calls and a number of Social Link Workers.

The GPs are also delivering weekly Ward Rounds in two local Care Homes.

We are an F2-training practice and also teach Year 5 Medical Students and Nursing Students. Our practice is an active member of the Inner West Primary Care Network, LMC, NGPS and North East North Cumbria ICB.

Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical:

  • Provide a full range of medical services as defined in the core GMS contract and additional and enhanced services where appropriate.
  • Undertake a variety of duties (as agreed) including surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, eConsultations, visiting patients at home, checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with all queries, paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion.
  • Make professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation.
  • Assess the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems.
  • Screen patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.
  • Develop care plans for health, in consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols.
  • Provide counselling and health education.
  • Refer patients to other care providers as appropriate.
  • Record clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to GMC standards.
  • Collect data for audit purposes.
  • Compile and issue computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding hand-written prescriptions whenever possible).
  • Prescribe in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary (or generically) whenever this is clinically appropriate.
  • Ensure accurate and timely input of patient data onto the clinical system.
  • Undertake all duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care.
  • On call duties: Late House call requests received between 12 noon and 6 pm to be triaged by the site on-call GP and appropriate action to be taken and clearly documented. The Urgent queries of the day are shared amongst all Clinicians working on that particular day.

Managerial/Administration:

  • Awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies/guidelines, e.g. prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety. Apply practice policies, standards and guidance and discuss with other members of the team how the policies, standards and guidelines will affect own work.
  • Commitment to life-long learning and audit to ensure evidence-based best practice.
  • Contribute to evaluation/audit and clinical standard setting within the organisation.
  • Contribute to the development of computer-based patient records.
  • Contribute to the summarising of patient records and read-coding patient data.
  • Attend training and events organised by the practice or other agencies, where appropriate.
  • Administration: process requests for insurance reports and claim forms (private and non-private).

Confidentiality:

  • All patients have the right to expect that all practice staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately at all times.
  • In the performance of duties, the post-holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, practice staff and other healthcare workers. They may also have access to information relating to the practice as a business organisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential.
  • Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.

Communication:

  • The post-holder must recognise the importance of effective communication within the team and strive to communicate effectively with other team members, patients, carers and recognise peoples needs for alternative methods of communication and respond accordingly.
  • To attend practice clinical and management meetings where appropriate.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Recognised qualifications for GP vocational training: MRCGP or equivalent
  • On the GMC GP register with a certificate of completion of training (CCT)
  • GMC Full Registration with a License to Practice
  • Membership and appropriate cover of a recognised defence union
  • Inclusion on Performers' List
  • Evidence of being up-to-date with Mandatory Training.
  • Regular appraisal and revalidation in accordance with the Good Medical Practice Framework

Desirable

  • Evidence of Clinical interests or specialist skills including Lead roles (Care Homes ward rounds, Palliative and EoL care in the community, Family Planning skills or other)

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a primary care environment
  • Experience of GP clinical IT system SystmOne or EMIS

Desirable

  • Experience of SystmOne Clinical system.
