An exciting opportunity is available for GP/GPs to join the prison healthcare team at HMP Cardiff. 2 sessions available fixed term for 12 months initially. We will consider applications from one GP or more GPs to take up these sessions. These sessions will be worked on a Friday although Mondays may be available, with an additional requirement to provide input into the coverage of a Saturday afternoon session on a rotation basis (1:5 rota) with other GPs.

About the prison

HMP Cardiff is a category B remand prison, with an operational capacity of around 780 located in the centre of Cardiff, with good transport links.

The Prison receives men from all parts of the UK.

Healthcare provision within HMP Cardiff includes a 22 bedded Healthcare Unit. The Healthcare Team includes GPs, Registered Nurses, Mental Health Trained Practitioners, Substance Misuse Nurse, Pharmacists, Admin Staff. There are also services provide by Psychiatry, Sexual Health, Optometry and Dentistry on an in-reach basis.

Main duties of the job

Working as part of the Multidisciplinary Team, you will provide clinical assessment and diagnosis to patients that will inform their future management and care plans. You will have a chance to become actively involved in audit, teaching and training as well as the management of substance misuse, mental health and blood borne viruses and you will also have the opportunity to develop skills to provide a highly specialist resource to other healthcare staff. You will also be key to the further development of service to ensure we evolve to the changing needs of our patients.

You will need to be a registered GP, included on a Medical Performers List.

A background in one of the following areas would be advantageous; Communicable Diseases, Emergency Medicine,Minor Surgery, Psychiatry, Substance Misuse, Trauma and Orthopaedics. The RCGP Part 2 certificate in substance misuse would also be advantageous, however, if you are new to this field, youwill be fully supported to develop into this role through a period of induction and training.

  • Entry on the GP Register
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Practice / Certificate Confirming Eligibility for General Practice Registration (CEGPR), or equivalent
  • Included on Welsh Medical Performers List
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
