Job summary

We are looking to recruit a full time Band 7 Advanced Mental Health Practitioner on a one-year secondment or fixed term contract. We operate a hybrid model of working where we work from our homes or from one of the Youth Justice Team bases (Reading, West Berkshire and Wokingham). You will be an enthusiastic and experienced Mental Health Practitioner, who is motivated, resilient, and flexible. You will be interested in the youth justice system and in supporting young people who have experienced adverse childhood experiences and have found themselves in trouble with the police. You would join the Berkshire CAMHS Health and Justice team which is a multidisciplinary team that supports the mental health, physical health and speech and communication needs of the young people who are working on a statutory or voluntary basis within the three West Berkshire Youth Justice Teams.

Main duties of the job

  • To support YJT staff to screen all young people who come into YJTs for previous mental health difficulties/CAMHS input.
  • To provide Consultation and Advice to members of the YJT team in regard to young people with complex needs who are vulnerable and risky.
  • To provide mental health assessments for young people where appropriate.
  • To offer specific therapeutic interventions where appropriate.
  • To lead trauma informed multiagency formulation meetings and multiagency interventions.
  • To offer training to the Youth justice teams and to other professionals working with young people involved in the criminal justice system.
  • Engage in multi-agency and integrated working and processes.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Recognised and relevant qualification as below: Registered mental health nurse Or Qualified Systemic Family Therapist - masters level Or Qualified Psychotherapist Or Clinical or Counselling Psychologist Or Occupational Therapist Or Social Worker
  • Registration with NMC or HCPC or other recognised professional body.

Desirable

  • A supervisory qualification in the relevant professional discipline.

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Significant post-qualifying experience of undertaking comprehensive assessment of mental health needs, developing care plans and offering appropriate support based on psychological formulation of presenting difficulties.
  • Experience of work with service users with high risk presentations and undertaking risk assessment and risk management plans.
  • Experience of hard to reach diverse community groups and individuals with emerging complex needs, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities and safeguarding.
  • Experience of working effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and multi-agency environment.

Desirable

  • Experience of working within mental health settings supporting children, adolescents and their families.
  • Experience of providing supervision or leadership to others.
  • Experience of contributing service improvement initiatives.
  • Experience of working in forensic settings.
  • Experience of representing mental health within the context of multi-agency care.
  • Experience of assessing and treating clients across a wide range of care settings.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

Essential

  • Knowledge and skills to assess acute mental health crisis and deliberate self-harm.
  • Demonstrates up to date knowledge of legislation and national strategies and requirements for CAMHS.
  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour.
  • Experience of managing complex caseloads and applying a range of interventions.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire others and to support others to develop increased skill and competence.
  • Ability to work autonomously and effectively in a team, reprioritising work to reflect changing needs
  • Competent IT skills and the ability to navigate around various systems and software packages (such as outlook, databases, e.g. RiO, MS Office and internet)

  • Knowledge of the Youth Justice system

  • Ability and willingness to work in a flexible way including working outside of normal hours to facilitate out of hours clinics as required.
