Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and innovative practitioner to develop their safeguarding skills alongside working in a Specialist role with Children in Our Care. The role will be split, requiring the practitioner to work operationally with a caseload of children 2 days a week and will be part of the developments within the safeguarding team for 3 days a week. The post holder will be responsible for working proactively and independently in managing their workload.

In part of the role you will work corporately in providing, assessment and support for a caseload of 16-18 year olds living in Stockport. This is a challenging and rewarding role with opportunity to develop the health assessment process and progress the Specialist Nurse role within the Initial Health Assessment clinic alongside the Paediatrician.

The service also has a key role in supporting School Nurses and Health Visitors in their work with Children in Care, providing professional consultation and advise. This role is a development one and would suit an autonomous practitioner who is passionate about improving standards and driving quality improvement across the health economy.

Main duties of the job

Safeguarding role:

  • Delivering safe and effective safeguarding practice
  • Enhancing the safeguarding experience for children through regular and constructive communication, advice, and input for Stockport NHS Foundation Trust staff
  • Developing and supporting the safeguarding performance of teams/clinicians
  • Ensuring effective contribution to the delivery of the organisation's objectives
  • Delivering safeguarding children training to the wider multidisciplinary team

Children In Our Care role

  • Clinical assessment, health screening and health surveillance of children and young people.
  • Assess, plan, and implement programmes of care in conjunction with other colleagues to improve outcomes for Children in Our Care.
  • Undertake direct holistic assessment and interventions with young people on a range of health and protection issues including sexual health, substance misuse and emotional health and well-being.
  • Identify any outstanding health issues for Children in Our Care
  • Liaison with other agencies to access services and ensure priority is given to referrals as needed.
  • Work in partnership with other team members and partner agencies in all aspects of client care.
  • Empower children and young people and act in advocacy role.
  • Undertake safeguarding assessments and risk assessments with Children in Our Care and initiate action as appropriate.

If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS at a cost of £41.90. This will be deducted from your first Trust salary.

In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £13.

Person Specification

Education and qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse (Children) / Registered Nurse (Adult)
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience to this level

Desirable

  • Specialist Community Public Health Nursing

Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of local and national guidance and research in relation to Safeguarding Children
  • An understanding of current issues affecting safeguarding and protecting children
  • Knowledge of legal framework and of political and policy changes affecting Children in Our Care and Safeguarding Children
  • Understanding of cultural issues in relation to Children in Our Care.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of delivering training.
  • Substantial experience as a caseload holder.
  • Evidence of working and engaging with children and young people (particularly 16-18 year olds).

Desirable

  • Demonstrates clinical supervision skills within a model of reflective learning.
  • Experience of participating in audit processes.

Skills and abilities

Essential

  • Commitment to team working.
  • Influencing and negotiation skills to be able to motivate and inspire others.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound clinical judgement and decision making supported by theoretical knowledge.
