Job summary
The construction of a new surgical hub at the
Trusts Dewsbury site is now well underway, and we are recruiting registered nurses and operating department practitioners, ideally with theatre experience, who are ready to take on a new challenge.
By joining the team, you will help provide
high-quality care to our patients in a theatre environment. The hub will bring
together a specialist group of staff all under one roof, working as a team to
reduce waiting times and improve patient experience.
A comprehensive training and induction package will
be provided to everyone, along with the opportunity to develop new skills.
Several hubs have already opened across England, making a significant
difference to both patients and staff.
Once complete, the hub will provide two theatres,
four major treatment rooms and ten outpatient clinic rooms. High volume, low
complexity day procedures will be carried out, including plastics, oral and
maxillofacial surgery, gynaecology, pain management, urology, vascular,
colorectal, general surgery, and upper gastrointestinal tract.
The roles can be undertaken by a registered ODP or registered nurse; training will be provided to ensure each role is performed with confidence.
Although the hub is due to open in summer 2024, we
expect anyone recruited to the roles will start from March 2024 onwards.
Main duties of the job
Postholders will participate in the
development and delivery of a brand-new service and must
demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills, adapt and embrace new ways of
working.
It is vital that candidates have an understanding of
working under pressure with high volume, low complexity patients. A key
requirement is the ability to be flexible and work within all specialties: scrub, anaesthetic, recovery, circulating, and escort
practitioners.
- Scrub practitioners are
essential to the operating team working alongside anaesthetists,
surgeons, and healthcare support workers. They support the surgeon and ensure
the availability and sterility of equipment, ensuring it is accounted for
- Anaesthetic
practitioners ensure that patient anaesthesia is as safe and effective as
possible
- The recovery
practitioner will prepare equipment and drugs to care for patients safely after an operation, monitor their condition, and provide
appropriate treatment until they have recovered, including managing pain,
discomfort or complications
- The circulating
practitioner is vital to the surgical team, providing a link
between the theatre and the rest of the hub
- Escort practitioners
provide essential support and care when taking patients to theatre
Performance reviews will monitor the ownership of individual learning and
development to ensure service requirements are met. It is important to maintain awareness of national and regional initiatives aligned with the running of
surgical hubs and patient experience.
