Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Nurse to join Division D as Deputy Divisional Head of Nursing!

We are seeking a highly motivated, compassionate, innovative and proactive Nurse Leader with significant experience at a senior level of managing services and teams

We are seeking to appoint an exceptional leader who is ready for a new and exciting leadership opportunity and one with a proven track record of leading nursing teams to deliver safe, kind, and excellent care within the hospital setting

This role requires compassionate leadership qualities to ensure effective working across multiple teams, an unrelenting focus on patient safety and continuous quality improvement, and a leader who supports and cares about our staff

You will be expected to demonstrate a highly visible, authoritative and democratic leadership style, which is underpinned by the values of the Trust. You will possess the drive and passion to make things happen; demonstrate leadership and is respected by clinical and non-clinical staff

You, alongside the current deputy divisional head of Nursing, will provide senior leadership support across the division

You will be fully supported in this role by both divisional and corporate nursing colleagues

Main duties of the job

Provide professional and managerial leadership for designated nursing teams and specialist nurses, providing a highly visible and authoritative presence ensuring the provision of high quality, responsive services with the needs of the patient at the centre of care delivery

Work in partnership with the Divisional Senior Leadership Team to ensure effective and efficient management of delegated projects to meet agreed targets within the resources available

Work in partnership with the Divisional Senior Leadership Team to ensure effective divisional quality governance systems and processes

Maintain a visible presence where patients, staff and visitors can turn for assistance and upon whom they can rely to ensure that the fundamental and specialist aspects of care are met

Lead on delegated projects to promote and develop nursing and nursing practice within the Division

Deputise for and assist the Divisional Head of Nursing to provide professional leadership to all nurses within the division, monitor standards and ensure delivery of the N&M strategy

Qualifications

Essential

  • Current and relevant registration on NMC Register
  • First degree
  • Master's degree (or working towards)
  • Evidence of relevant continuous professional development
  • Leadership development course

Desirable

  • Training in systems approach to investigation of patient safety incidents
  • Training in quality improvement methodology
  • Trained as After Action Review Conductor/Facilitator

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of substantial experience as a Matron/Senior Clinical Nurse, Lead Nurse overseeing a number of clinical areas/services and demonstrating a depth and breadth of nursing knowledge
  • Strive to support contributions of others and to share leadership, nurturing capability and continuing development on oneself and other in areas of practice
  • Able to demonstrate collaborative working across professions and services
  • Broad clinical experience in an acute hospital, OPD, Nurse Specialist, Nurse Led setting
  • Experience of effectively leading or supporting service transformational change
  • Experience of leading/supporting clinical quality improvement initiatives
  • Experience of delivering education and developing and implementing evidence based practice
  • Experience of patient safety investigations using systems approach methodology
  • Experience of managing a clinical team including significant experience of staff management, including the setting of objectives, team and individual appraisal, recruitment and disciplinary issues
  • Budget management experience, including reducing costs, monitoring and determining corrective action

  • After Action Review participation/ facilitation
  • Lead Investigator for Serious Incident investigation

  • Knowledge of current developments in nursing & political awareness of current NHS issues
  • In-depth knowledge of quality governance principles, systems, and processes
  • In-depth knowledge of workforce planning principles, Trust workforce policies and recruitment and retention strategy
  • Able to articulate the evolving vision for the future of nursing and to demonstrate opportunities this can bring to teams

Skills

Essential

  • Well developed leadership and influencing skills with the ability to enthuse, motivate and involve individuals and teams across the trust
  • Highly developed communications skills, including liaison/negotiation skills and writing/presentation skills
  • Able to demonstrate sound political judgement and astuteness in understanding and working with complex policy, diverse interest groups and common sense in knowing 'when to brief up the line'
  • Able to advise and influence senior managers in relation to governance concerns

  • Computer literacy including competent in Word and excel
