Job summary

This is a 10 month fixed term position due to parental leave in the Physiotherapy department as an Advanced Practice Physiotherapist in Critical Care and Cardiology Pathway Lead. The post has been developed due to increased capacity and patient complexity in Critical Care and increased Cardiology activity across the Trust.

The post holder will provide advanced clinical assessment, treatment and service development within Critical Care and those with ongoing critical illness, working alongside the Critical Care Team Lead and Deputy. Patient cohorts include; cardiothoracic surgery, ECMO, mechanical circulatory support devices, heart failure, transplant, and cardiology patients.

The post holder will also be responsible for the service delivery across the Cardiology Pathway. This will include strategic oversight of physiotherapy provision, day to day support of junior staff and service improvement projects.

The post holder will have opportunities to develop their advanced clinical skills with support of the Physiotherapy Service Lead.

This role provides the individual with a fantastic opportunity to work with key stakeholders and the wider MDT to advance the service provided and co-ordinate high quality patient care. Within the role the post holder will engage in audit, research and education, and support colleagues with their own service improvement work.

Main duties of the job

Advanced and holistic clinical assessment, reasoning, and management of complex Critical Care and complex Cardiology patients

Development of extended scope skills to benefit patients with critical illness

Support rehabilitation of complex patients throughout their hospital admission, including outreach into the ward environment and follow up.

Leading audit, research, and service improvement projects in Critical Care and Cardiology

Day to day management of physiotherapy staffing for Cardiology wards

Attend Trust level meetings for Cardiology Services

Supporting colleagues to advance their clinical reasoning skills to achieve rotational and IPR goals

Exploring opportunities to provide teaching within and outside the Trust

Seeking out CPD opportunities such as conferences and courses

BSc/ Pre- Reg MSc/ Grad. Dip. in Physiotherapy with HCPC registration
Post graduate education/ MSc level (or equivalent level) training relevant to Critical Care.
HCPC registration.
Active participation and engagement within specialist interest group membership.

CSP member.

Experience

Essential

Clinical Pillar
Specialist physiotherapy knowledge and advanced clinical reasoning in critical care, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology and rehabilitation. Ability to support others to develop their knowledge.
Evidence of significant experience in physiotherapeutic management of patients with critical illness and associated condition and treatment options.
Evidence of development of scope of practice with new skills and support others to also develop.
Ability to work independently and prioritise own and others workload and delegate effectively to others.
Leadership Pillar
Evidence of excellent communication, leadership and management skills across the multi-professional team.
Evidence of excellent communication skills, including verbal, non verbal and written, in difficult and challenging situations
Ability to problem solve and make complex clinical and non-clinical decisions and support the team to also do so

Engagement in post-graduate education relevant to CCA and cardiology; including attending, presenting and organising relevant courses, study days and conferences.
Experience of teaching and presentation to peers, junior staff and students.
