The post offered is that of a Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry in the South Camden Recovery & Rehabilitation Team, a community mental health team that treats people with psychotic illnesses. The care pathway applies the recovery model of care. It delivers evidence-based treatments to patients living in the Southern part of Camden - Bloomsbury, Kings Cross and Camden Town. The team is sub-divided into two mini-teams and the post holder will work alongside another consultant. Jointly they will be the clinical leads for the team. There are approximately 600 service users on the caseload at any one time, with 300 patients in each mini-team. The team is based at The Peckwater Resource Centre, 6 Peckwater Street, London NW5

Main duties of the job

This is a substantive position for 10 Programmed Activities: 7.5 Direct Clinical Care and 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities.

The South Camden Recovery Team is part of the care pathway for patients in HoNOS care clusters 11, 12 and 13, i.e., patients with psychotic illnesses. The care pathway applies the recovery model of care. It delivers evidence-based treatments to patients living in the Southern part of Camden - Bloomsbury, Kings Cross and Camden Town. The post holder will work alongside another consultant within the team. There are approximately 450 service users on the caseload at any one time, with 225 patients in each consultant. Out of these, the post holder will have a medical-only out-patient caseload of approximately 80 - 100 patients shared with the Higher Trainee and GP Trainee - whose work they will supervise. The average team member caseload is currently 23 cases per worker.

Job responsibilities

The direct clinical care sessions will include: assessing new referrals to the team; reviewing patients and advising on their care; contributing to risk assessment and management; helping to manage crises; conducting medication reviews; participating in CPA reviews; and providing Consultant input into the team meetings.

The South Camden R&R Team is an innovative service with a strong focus on continuing service development, Quality Improvement, and conducting service evaluation and research. The post holder will be expected to support and contribute to these activities. The service is part of a wider programme in the trust aimed at reducing the health inequalities for people with severe mental illnesses.

Camden and Islington has very strong academic links with the academic unit at UCL. There is a tradition of the Trust producing high quality research in the area of service delivery. The post-holder will be encouraged and supported to pursue any research interests, with the support of their academic colleagues in the UCL Department of Mental Health Sciences. Camden is a vibrant and busy Central London borough with a rich mix of cultures and ethnic groups and a diverse urban geography from Bloomsbury to Hampstead.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications/Registration

Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 6 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training
  • Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician
  • Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing
  • Shared Services training up to date to be an approved trainer/clinical supervisor
  • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry

Desirable

  • Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training
  • Training as a Consultant mentor
  • Other relevant post-graduate qualification (incl. those gained outside UK

Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas and influence others.
  • Good knowledge of and ability to use both spoken and written English
  • Ability to organise workload and manage time and delegate responsibility where appropriate
  • Ability to practise as an independent Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Teaching and supervision skills for undergraduate medical students, doctors in training and multi-professional staff
  • Ability to work in a team environment and to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multidisciplinary basis with all levels of staff.
  • Experience in undertaking clinical audit, investigating serious incidents and handling complaints

Desirable

  • A special interest or willingness to develop one in an area which helps to meet the needs of the Trust
  • Experience in successfully delivering research projects

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge and observance of the requirements and duties of a doctor laid down by the GMC in Good Medical Practice.
  • Clinical knowledge of the full range mental disorders.
  • Experience in the assessment of complex clinical cases involving severe and enduring mental illness and significant risk histories and the ability to assertively engage and manage such cases. This will include experience working on acute Inpatient wards at senior trainee or Consultant level.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and safeguarding practices
  • Expertise in a comprehensive range of evidence based treatment and case management options including pharmacotherapy.
  • Experience in work-place based assessments of doctors in training
  • Knowledge of clinical commissioning and external organisations that interface with an NHS Trust.
  • Willingness to participate in research as appropriate and within the context of the duties of the post
  • Good understanding of Trust governance structures, especially clinical governance

Desirable

  • Experience in teaching small and large groups
  • Experience in developing policies and protocols.
