Dentist, Band A - Fixed term for 12 months - with a potential to become permanent

Hours - 22.5 hrs per week (days to be negotiated)

Salary - £47,653 to £71,479 depending on experience

We are looking for a confident, competent colleague who will join our dedicated dental team. The dentist will be based at Castle Circus Health Centre, Torquay but may have to work at other locations as required. It is therefore essential that the applicant is able to drive, has a UK driving licence and a car for travel.

Accredited supervised clinical practice in provision of treatment with Conscious Sedation both Inhalation and Intravenous is available in order to support independent practice in Conscious Sedation.

Full GDC registration and a performer number to work in the Primary dental care setting are essential requirements for this role. The successful post holder will be keen to develop their skills in managing people with a wide range of special needs.

Main duties of the job

  • Full range of treatment for adults and children whose special needs have prevented them from accessing dental care through the General Dental Service.
  • Urgent dental care for patients who have been unable to access treatment with a general dental practitioner to resolve acute problems appropriately, this includes extractions and permanent restorations.
  • Undertaking epidemiology field work when required, training will be provided.
  • The provision of professional advice and support to other health workers and appropriate liaison with other dental care professionals i.e. GDS and Hospital colleagues.
  • Treatment carried out under sedation (subject to appropriate experience and/or additional training and support).
  • Administration associated with these duties including keeping comprehensive contemporaneous records
  • Domiciliary care and provision of care on the Mobile Dental Unit depending on the need of the service
  • Responsible for facilitating access to care for vulnerable children and adults. This will include facilitating access to oral care with other dental services (e.g. GDS and secondary care services), delivering care directly to these groups and delegating to other clinical staff within CDS appropriately.

This role may be extended to include the delivery of oral care to more complex patients. This may extend the competencies required to deliver this care and thus facilitate a Band A dentist to progress to the first increment of Band B.

  • Responsible, jointly with the Clinical Director, for demonstrating and further developing the vision, mission and agreed values that guide the service in its work
  • Responsible, jointly with the Clinical Director, for delivering activity to contribute to the requirements of the Community Dental Service (CDS), Service Level Agreement (SLA) with commissioning organisations
  • Responsible for delivering access oral care which includes urgent care appointments, and follow up appointments to resolve acute problems: this includes extractions and permanent restorations
  • Responsible for delivering single full courses of treatment to facilitate less complex patients accessing GDS care, when it is agreed that capacity exists
  • Responsible for contributing to the effective and efficient day-to-day running of the CDS
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with policies, protocols and procedures as set by the CDS, Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust (TSDFT) and other external bodies including the Department of Health (DoH), the General Dental Council (GDC), CQC, COSHH and HASAWA.

Working alongside a dedicated and motivated team you will be responsible for the provision of dental care for patients of all ages who have additional needs. All dentists contracted to work in the CDS are responsible for complying with the requirements of the Terms & Conditions of Salaried Primary Dental Care Services (England) January 2008 and any later amendments. This includes, among other requirements, the requirement to evidence the set of competencies appropriate to the role of each individual dentist, as stated in schedule 7 of the full Terms & Conditions.

A primary dental qualification i.e BDS registered with the General Dental Council of the UK or equivalent is essential for this post along with an NHS performer number.

Patients are referred from other health care professionals to the service. The CDS also facilitates access to oral care services for vulnerable and disadvantaged people.

Oral care is delivered via two fixed bases in Torbay and Newton Abbot, the day surgery unit at Torbay Hospital, a self-drive Mobile Dental Unit (MDU), and domiciliary care for those who fit the remit of the service.
