Job summary

Rehabilitation Medicine at St George's Hospital, Tooting:

16 Level 1 rehabilitation beds, currently located here, with the plan to develop and additional 8 "Rapid Access Acute Rehabilitation" beds through this post. The Major Trauma Centre, and Neurosciences Units are based here, so the successful candidate should expect to work closely with our neurology, stroke, neurosurgery, neuropsychology and trauma colleagues.

The advertised post initial supported from funding via NHSE and will be closely linked to existing rehabilitation services. The successful candidate will be jointly responsible for a share of the inpatients treated St George's Hospital, shared with the current incumbent this would amount to an average of 8-10 inpatients per consultant. Outpatient clinics include neuro rehab, spasticity and amputation depending on experience and interest. There are non-resident on-call duties, supported by the on call junior doctors.

Main duties of the job

  1. Working with existing Consultants, therapist and nursing colleagues to provide a comprehensive Rehabilitation Medicine service St George's Hospital
  2. Responsibility for the continuing care and treatment of patients, and providing leadership to a multidisciplinary team
  3. Duties for inpatients include assessment of patients with complex rehabilitation needs, ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings; goal and discharge planning for individual patients; participation data collection likely to include UK-ROC data collection, family meetings, advice on rehabilitation (including sign posting of services, treatment and prognosis).
  4. Duties for outpatients include rehabilitation follow-up after discharge
  5. Provision of cover for consultant colleagues during reasonable periods of leave, including care of patients & supervision of junior doctors. (A minimum of 6 weeks' notice is to be given for all leave requests). Cross cover for clinics may be possible dependent on availability
  6. Liaison with other consultants in other departments including neurology, stroke, neurosurgery, trauma & orthopaedics, Neuropsychiatry and liaison with other AHPs within multidisciplinary rehabilitation teams (Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, Psychology, Speech and Language therapy)

As part of the role, the consultant may be asked to provide some cover for Level 1 Specialist Rehabilitation Beds at St Georges Hospital. This would be to cover annual leave/ study leave. The consultant will provide reciprocal cover.
