Job summary

To work as a member of the renal physiotherapy team assisting the physiotherapists to provide a high standard of patient care by undertaking delegated clinical programmes of management. The post holder will assist with the rehabilitation of renal patients, progressing treatments in line with departmental protocols. The post holder will also undertake administrative duties to support the functioning of the department.

Main duties of the job

  • Once inducted, to work with minimal or no direct supervision of a physiotherapist.
  • To manage the physiotherapy rehabilitation of own caseload of patients as delegated by the physiotherapist
  • To assist with the care of patients including receiving them, transporting to treatment area, preparing drinks, supervising or assisting with drinking, toileting, dressing and undressing in preparation for their treatment programme.
  • To provide treatment to patients in line with established treatment programmes, utilising a variety of basic physiotherapy techniques such as assisting a patient with specific exercises
  • To progress patients undergoing routine physiotherapy programmes in line with established protocols, reporting back to the physiotherapist as required
  • To be able to recognise change in the condition of a patient, decide whether to treat and watch and document the patient response/reaction to any treatment undertaken.
  • To be able to measure and assess identified outcome measures, and use findings to inform the physiotherapists and treatment progression.
  • To apply, remove and progress the use of therapeutic equipment such as exercise bikes with dialysis patients in line with protocol, or as instructed by the physiotherapist
  • To assist the physiotherapist with individual/group treatments/exercise classes progressing to independent supervision of classes as delegated by the physiotherapist, and to adjust exercises according to the patient's health status on that day
