Job summary
We are currently seeking an experienced Resident Medical Officer (RMO) to support an elective orthopaedic service.
The RMO will provide medical cover for patients throughout their elective surgical pathway, supporting safe and effective care before and after surgery.
This position requires a doctor with previous NHS orthopaedic ward experience, full GMC registration and the confidence to assess and manage patients within a busy surgical environment.
You will work closely with Consultants, nursing teams, physiotherapists, pharmacists and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure patients receive safe, coordinated and high-quality care.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Providing medical cover for elective orthopaedic patients on the ward.
- Reviewing and assessing patients before and following surgery.
- Managing routine postoperative medical issues.
- Recognising clinical deterioration and escalating concerns appropriately.
- Supporting Consultants and surgical teams with perioperative patient management.
- Responding to clinical concerns raised by nursing and other healthcare professionals.
- Participating in clinical handovers and ensuring continuity of patient care.
- Maintaining accurate, clear and timely clinical documentation.
- Working collaboratively with nursing staff, physiotherapists, pharmacists and the wider MDT.
- Supporting Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathways.
- Supporting safe and timely discharge, including same-day discharge where clinically appropriate.
- Maintaining high standards of patient safety, clinical governance and professional practice.

- Competent in acute medical assessment and management.

- Experience working in fast-paced orthopaedic or surgical units.
- Knowledge of enhanced recovery protocols and perioperative medicine.
