Job summary
The Treating Tobacco Dependency have an exciting opportunity to join them, to work and support and contribute to the implementation and management of the tobacco dependent treatment service and the smoke free initiative at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Trust.
Tobacco Dependency Treatment Advisor will support the day-to-day running of the Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service to ensure safe, well organised, and evidence-based care is offered routinely to all identified smokers and provided to all that access the service.
This role will be diverse with opportunity to visit several sites across the GMMH footprint to deliver smoking cessation interventions and support the Trust's smoke free initiative. Tobacco Dependency Treatment Advisor will make a valuable contribution to improving health and reducing health inequality amongst people with SMI.
Main duties of the job
- Deliver tobacco harm reduction (smoking cessation) assessments, advice and support sessions including the provision of motivational and behavioural support.
- Contribute to the development of individual Tobacco Dependence care plans
- Support and advise patients with SMI to switch to and access NRT whilst in mental health inpatient.
- Be a positive role model to each ward-based smoke free champion and other clinical staff in supporting patients to reduce harm from tobacco whilst maintaining a strong visible clinical presence
- To support the implementation of the Smokefree Policy and help increase confidence in Harm reduction/ Stop Smoking conversations.
- Ensure robust discharge planning for the patient's ongoing tobacco dependency treatment for patients wishing to quit or who have an ongoing harm reduction programme

Responsibilities
1 Deliver tobacco harm reduction (smoking cessation) assessments, advice and support sessions, including advice on stop smoking medications and vapes, working within recommended protocols and guidelines. This will involve face to face sessions in a variety of settings and venues across the Trust.
2 Contribute to the development of individual Tobacco Dependence care plans including the robust completion of appropriate documentation.
3 Support and advise patients with SMI, who wish to, to switch to a vape and/or access NRT whilst in mental health inpatient, outpatient and community mental health settings, in line with
the NHS Long term Plan and Early Implementer Site delivery
models.
4 Contribute to individual risk assessments around Tobacco Dependence and ensure information is shared with the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT)
5 Ensure robust discharge planning for the patients ongoing tobacco dependency treatment for patients wishing to quit or who have an ongoing harm reduction programme.
6 To report observations and relevant information including any changes in patients physical and mental health and behaviour to qualified staff and record appropriately in the patients electronic record.
7 To understand the range of interventions available, the evidence base and potential outcomes for patients and apply appropriately either in group or individual settings.
8 To regularly review progress, evaluate and report on outcomes to qualified professionals and/or other members of the MDT
9 Support promotion of wellbeing events including national health campaigns around Stoptober, National No Smoking Day etc
10 Be a positive role model to each ward smoke free champion and other clinical staff in supporting patients to reduce harm from tobacco; maintain a strong visible clinical presence
11 To maintain working knowledge of Smoke Free legislation, Trust Smokefree policies, and other relevant guidance pertaining to mental health services and tobacco dependency
12 Delegate work where appropriate and support ward staff and students in actively engaging in smoke free conversations / facilitating groups to support behaviour change around tobacco smoking
13 To support induction of new staff to our Smokefree Policy and Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service and help increase confidence in Harm reduction/ Stop Smoking conversations.
14 To support the delivery of training sessions to peers and colleagues as part of the Physical Health essential training.
15 Assist in the completion of referrals to relevant community support and follow-up these referrals as required to ensure smooth transition.
16 Take an active role in ensuring that high standards are maintained in a safe environment, which promotes equality and sensitivity for all patients and staff.
17 Respect the dignity, privacy and independence of patients at all times and act in a manner to respect the customs, individuality, values, sexuality and spiritual beliefs and activity,
supporting patients to be able to fulfil these. To identify and
take action when any behaviour undermines diversity and equality.
18 To take an active lead and promote recovery with the patient journey from admission to discharge.
19 Support other staff in developing their capability and skills around tobacco dependence.
