Job summary
The SHCSW within Neurosurgical theatres is a member of the multi-disciplinary team whose function is to assist the team in the delivery of a high standard of patient care. This will involve undertaking basic and extended skills with indirect supervision.
Competent support of registered staff to provide quality patient focused care using extended skills gained from achieving a relevant Level 3 Healthcare NVQ/HCA qualification.
Contribute to resource management. Must be able able to multi task and be IT literate, as you will be using multiple Trust IT systems as part of your role.
The Neuro 24-hour service requires staff to take part in a rotational night shift pattern.
***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***
Main duties of the job
a) To carry out a range of clinical duties with minimal / no direct supervisionb) Participate in patient assessment providing high quality holistic patient care and escalating concerns about patients to other clinical staff.c) Lead by example and supervise/support junior members of staff to improve and maintain high standards of care.d) Implements clinical care packages through a range of delegated clinical care duties relevant to the area of service.

- To assist in the preparation of The operating theatre prior to operations and to carry out cleaning of designated areas within the theatre area as directed
- To be able to recognise and meet the specific needs of patients undergoing surgery. Ability to use your knowledge and experience to undertake non-routine duties and an understanding to take decisions within your area of responsibility.
- To maintain a safe environment for patients and staff
- To escort patients as required in accordance with Hospital policy. Practice safe standards of care to patients following Trust guidelines and policies and be able to concentrate for periods throughout the day with occasional interruptions.
- To carry out a range of (limited) clinical duties with minimal / no supervision, including for example, Prepare the operating theatre for the procedure. Check that equipment is available and functioning correctly. Assist with stocking instruments, consumables, and surgical supplies. Help transfer and position patients safely onto and off the operating table. Support completion of patient identification and safety checks, including the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist. Ensure appropriate documentation is available. Remain outside the sterile field. Retrieve additional instruments, implants, equipment, or consumables requested by the scrub team. Open sterile items aseptically for the scrub practitioner. Assist with specimen handling and transportation according to local policy. Monitor stock levels and replace items as needed. Record information required during the procedure if delegated and trained to do so. Maintain theatre cleanliness and workflow. Communicate with recovery, wards, laboratories, porters, and other departments as required. NB: this list is not exhaustive and will vary depending on area of work.
