Job summary

Fixed term until February 2027 - MT04

The Rehabilitation Medicine service provides inpatient specialist rehabilitation from the Lotus Rehabilitation Centre and works closely with acute specialties across Queen Alexandra Hospital and with the wider Wessex Trauma Network, supporting patients through transition from acute care into rehabilitation and onward into community services.

The Lotus Rehabilitation Centre is a modern 26-bed rehabilitation facility, comprising 13 beds for UKROC Rehabilitation Medicine and 13 beds for Stroke Rehabilitation. For UKROC rehabilitation, the unit is classified as level 2a, being the only local unit able to accept complex rehabilitation patients referred from hospitals throughout Hampshire. The unit includes two rehabilitation gyms, patient social space, meeting facilities and access to outdoor rehabilitation and garden areas.

This post offers an opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated doctor to gain experience in specialist Rehabilitation Medicine within the Lotus Rehabilitation Centre at Queen Alexandra Hospital. The post holder will work as part of a comprehensive multidisciplinary team caring for adults with complex neurological, medical and rehabilitation needs, under the supervision of the Consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work closely with medical, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, psychology, dietetics and other colleagues to support coordinated, goal-focused rehabilitation.

The post is designed to provide broad exposure to the assessment and management of complex disability following neurological injury or illness, major trauma and other disabling conditions. Previous Rehabilitation Medicine experience is desirable but not essential. Applicants with a sound grounding in acute/general medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, trauma, orthopaedics, emergency medicine or related specialties would be well placed to develop within the role.

The successful applicant will be encouraged to participate in continuing professional development such as teaching sessions, quality improvement, audit, and clinical governance. The role will provide experience in the senior medical coordination of a specialist inpatient rehabilitation service, including supporting junior doctors, multidisciplinary working, family communication and escalation of complex clinical issues to the consultant team.
