Job summary

Guy's and St Thomas's NHS Foundation Trust are looking to appoint 2 new GPwER posts to work for one day a week in the breast unit. The successful candidates will become part of the team involved in the diagnosis of patients presenting with a new breast symptom (one-stop clinic).

There will be training and mentorship embedded within the role with scope for continuing professional development including exposure to interventional radiology and operating theatres. The post also involves important service development projects to align the breast unit with the needs of the local community. This includes setting up a breast pain pathway and developing a dedicated paediatric pathway to improve the experience of children and young people with breast problems.

GSTT is a world-renowned centre for cancer care, and the breast service is made up of a dedicated multi-disciplinary team who strive to provide exceptional and timely care for patients with breast cancer. The successful candidates will be a welcome addition to the team, bringing their knowledge and expertise into the hospital environment for the benefit of patients.

Main duties of the job

  • Following a period of training, the post holder is expected to see 12 new symptomatic 'one-stop' breast patients in a 4-hour session every week.
  • The post holder will also be part of the team setting up 2 important service improvements, which involve community engagement. Namely, a breast pain (mastalgia) pathway and a paediatric service for children and young people with breast problems aged under 17.
  • Ongoing mentorship and appraisal will be provided by the clinical lead (breast surgeon).
  • There is scope for professional development including access to diagnostic and interventional radiology and theatre.
  • There is scope to be involved in research and audit projects.
