Job summary

We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist with the IBMS Specialist Diploma (or equivalent) in Cellular Pathology to join our friendly and supportive team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Based primarily at St James's University Hospital, Leeds, this Specialist Biomedical Scientist role sits within a large, highly specialised Cellular Pathology service, supporting the delivery of high-quality diagnostic services for a diverse range of patients across the region. Applicants should have practical experience of Cellular Pathology laboratory techniques to specialist BMS level, a commitment to quality, and a passion for delivering excellence in patient care. This is an exciting opportunity to work across the full Cellular Pathology pathway, rotating through reception and dissection, the main laboratory, further work, molecular diagnostics and cytology. Working alongside Advanced Biomedical Scientists, Biomedical Scientists, associate practitioners, Biomedical support workers and supported by dedicated Quality and Training Managers, you will play a key role in ensuring the timely and accurate processing of diagnostic specimens. We are looking for an organised, proactive and collaborative individual who can work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, lead by example, and contribute to continuous service improvement.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist you will be expected to perform a range of specialist clinical technical investigations. You may be required to work in a team or independently, for example when working on-call. You will have the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute towards the provision of an accurate, timely service for patients. You will be expected to apply professional judgements and specialist skills to technically complex and sometimes difficult situations. You may be required to organize the tasks of Biomedical Scientists, associate practitioners and support workers. The post holder will primarily assist in the day to day running of lab areas, under supervision/delegation of the Advanced Biomedical Scientist. You will participate as required in BMS duties within reception, cut-up, main lab, further work, molecular, Non-cervical cytology and specialist histology areas of the department. This will also involve QC and EQA authorisation, training, risk and incident assessment and investigation and HR procedures. The department operates Monday to Saturday between 7:30am and 7:30pm, incorporating standard and extended day shifts, with a minimum requirement to work 1 in 4 Saturdays.

The department processes a wide range of specialist work and provides Histopathology, NonGynae Cytology, Andrology, Muscle, Nerve, Immunohistochemistry, Molecular and Mortuary services. We have UKAS accreditation to ISO15189:2022 standards.
