Job summary

Appointed to support Theatre staff in the delivery of direct patient care, the Theatre Porter will be responsible for varied duties, with the inclusion of safe transportation of patients to and from wards to operating theatres using wheelchairs, trolleys and beds, movement of equipment, preparation of the theatre suite and equipment prior to and following surgery, and maintaining the standards of cleanliness within the operating theatres and associated areas, as well as stock management for the operating department.

Main duties of the job

The Theatre Porter supports the Theatre team in delivering safe, effective and high-quality patient care. The role is responsible for the safe transportation of patients between wards, theatres and recovery areas using beds, trolleys and wheelchairs, ensuring patient dignity, comfort and safety at all times.

Key responsibilities include assisting with patient transfers and positioning, preparing theatre areas and equipment before and after procedures, maintaining high standards of cleanliness, and ensuring stock levels are maintained across the department. The post holder will manage deliveries, distribute equipment and prostheses, support the safe handling of clinical specimens, collect controlled drugs when required, and undertake regular safety checks.

The Theatre Porter will maintain effective communication by managing departmental phones and emergency bleeps, correctly dispose of clinical waste, and follow manual handling, health and safety, and infection prevention procedures. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, the post holder will promote a professional, supportive and patient-focused environment while ensuring incidents, accidents and concerns are reported in line with organisational policies.
