Job description
Job responsibilities

The Dermatology service for the population of West Dorset is based at Dorset County Hospital, with some locality-based Dermatology clinics provided at Community hospitals for simple diagnostic and therapeutic referrals.

The service is currently staffed by 1 Consultant Dermatologist (Dr Koch), 1 Associate Specialist (Dr Tilley), 1 locum Consultant Dermatologist (Dr Hodder),1 Specialty Doctor (Dr Al Sharbatee) specialist nurses and medical secretaries.

Most referrals including more complex cases requiring the facilities of DGH (investigation/intervention e.g. PUVA/inpatient care etc.) are managed within the DCH clinic setting. PUVA and UVB facilities are provided at Dorset County Hospital using a Waldman 6002 PUVA cabinet and 6001 UVB cabinet fitted with TL-01 narrow band tubes. The UV service is staffed by specialist nurses, who also carries out other services including patch testing and photodynamic therapy. There are nurse led services for isotretinoin and systemic drug monitoring including biologics. There is a dedicated skin cancer nurse specialist who attends the MDT and supports patients with diagnosed skin cancer, a dermatology nurse specialist developing additional interest in Paediatric Dermatology, and recent appointments earmarked for developing provision for nurse-led surgery and other nurse-led services. The consultant has a dedicated clinic nurse who is a registered nurse and also assists in minor surgery.

Day Surgery facilities are provided for more complex Dermatological Surgery, with further provision negotiable depending on the skills of the incoming consultant, with additional close links with Maxillofacial Surgery, ENT and General Surgery. Possible future service developments could include Mohs micrographic surgery, although this would require agreement of the Trust and Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group.

Specialist clinics currently include Paediatric Dermatology (Dr Hodder), a virtual specialist joint clinic with GUM/Gynaecology for patients with vulval disorders (Dr Koch) and Skin Lymphoma (Dr Koch). There is also a monthly Combined Clinic for more complex dermatology patients who benefit from a collective opinion from the whole team.
