Job summary
The Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) in the Emergency Department at Manchester Royal Infirmary is an autonomous practitioner responsible for delivering advanced clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients presenting with undifferentiated and complex emergency conditions.
Working within a busy, high-acuity city-centre emergency department, the ACP provides safe, effective, evidence-based care to patients presenting with medical, surgical, trauma and minor injury conditions, within their individual scope of practice and level of competence. The post holder utilises advanced clinical reasoning and decision-making skills to initiate investigations, develop management plans, prescribe where appropriately qualified, and determine appropriate referral, escalation, admission, or discharge.
Alongside clinical responsibilities, the post holder contributes to the four pillars of advanced practice: clinical practice, leadership and management, education, and research. This includes supporting the development of trainee ACPs, delivering clinical education, contributing to clinical governance and audit, and supporting service improvement initiatives.
The post holder will demonstrate professional leadership, accountability and a commitment to continuous development, patient safety, and the delivery of high-quality emergency care.
Main duties of the job
The Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) will deliver autonomous, high-quality emergency care across all areas of the Emergency Department, including Resuscitation, Majors, Minors and the initial assessment and streaming of patients to appropriate services, including Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC).
The post holder will undertake comprehensive clinical assessments, formulate differential diagnoses, request and interpret investigations, initiate evidence-based treatment and develop appropriate management plans for patients presenting with a wide range of undifferentiated medical, surgical, and traumatic conditions. They will demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning, recognise and manage the deteriorating patient, and initiate timely escalation and referral to specialist teams when required.
Working collaboratively with emergency medicine consultants, medical and nursing colleagues, specialty teams and the wider multidisciplinary workforce, the ACP will support effective clinical decision-making, safe patient pathways, and timely patient flow.
In addition to direct clinical responsibilities, the ACP will contribute to the four pillars of advanced practice through clinical leadership, education, research, and service development.
The ACP will actively contribute to improving patient safety, experience, and departmental performance, working flexibly across the Emergency Department.
