Job summary
Moorfields is one of the world's leading eye hospitals, providing expertise in clinical care, research and education. We are expanding our network of satellite sites; providing acute ophthalmic services at StGeorges and Croydon and provide community services in Queen Marys.Our main focus is the treatment and care of NHS patients with a wide range of eye problems, from common complaints to rare conditions which require treatments not available anywhere else in the UK. We treat people at our main hospital base in London's City Road and at over 20 satellite facilities in and around the capital, which enables us to provide expert treatment closer to patient's homes.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning and provision of specialist ophthalmic nursing advice and carries out specialist nursing procedures, including surgical patients. The post holder will provide clinical and managerial leadership to junior staff, students and may undertake research, lead clinical audits in own specialist area. They will assist the Ward Manager in ensuring the effective running of the ward; out of hours urgent care service; outpatient activities carried out on the ward. Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of patients and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centered care principles.

Clinical and Patient Care
- Independently manage a group of patients within the ophthalmic speciality whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised and personalised direct care.
- Responsible for carrying out clinical ophthalmic practice within the designated clinical area, ensuring that high quality, current evidence-based nursing assessment, care planning, implementation, interventions and evaluations for patients is provided from admission through to discharge.
- Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. This includes history taking, physical examination and the requesting of agreed diagnostic procedures/clinical investigations.
- Assist the ward manager in the effective running of the ward in accordance with Trust and local policies and procedures.
- Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication for in-patients.
- Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in the speciality. To interpret information and take appropriate action and to lead others to do the same.
