Job summary

Applications are invited for a Salaried GP working 1 Session on a Friday in Cardiff and Vale Health Inclusion Service (CaVHIS) at Cardiff Royal Infirmary. Covering a range of patient groups, such as: Asylum Seekers, Refugees, Homeless and Alternative Treatment Scheme patients.

We are looking for staff who have a passion for working in this complex, but rewarding specialist field, and are seeking to increase the continuity of medical presence.

The post offers a wide variety of clinical sessions, including clinic based, outreach and Alternative Treatment Scheme clinics. Language Line is available to support communication with non-English speakers. Support will be provided for those with limited experience working within this medical field.

Consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working.This post is not recognised for Postgraduate training.A Disclosure Check will be required of the successful candidates.

Main duties of the job

Provision of pre-booked and urgent GP consultations to vulnerable people in the serviceThe gathering of comprehensive medical and social histories from patients, using systems such as Language Line to facilitate effective communication Ensuring that all manual and electronic sources of information are used to gather and update information on the patientPhysical examination and assessment of vulnerable patients and familiesDiagnosis, treatment and referral on as indicated, being mindful at all times of the needs of this vulnerable patient group

Maintenance of accurate patient records using paper and electronic systems used in the service such as Vision.Prescribing in line with C& V UHB Medicines Management guidelines and protocols to ensure safe prescribing and prudent use of resourcesThe provision of medication reviews as appropriate and monitoring of repeat prescribingProvision of health education as appropriate

The main purpose of the Salaried GP role is to provide direct clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment to patients registered with CAVHIS. This includes all aspects of urgent and routine presentations with escalation of care and referral on to other services as determined by priority and severity.

The postholder will be familiar with legislation and guidance in relation to asylum seekers and have experience in providing services to non- English speakers who are new to the UK, have had little contact with health services in the past who have experienced physical and mental trauma related to persecution, torture, enslavement and loss of loved ones.

The person will work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team made up of a Clinical Director, a senior nurse, adult and paediatric nurses, health visitor, midwife, service manager, reception/ administration staff and British Red Cross.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice and entry on the GP register
  • Included on the Welsh Medical Performers List
  • MB BCh
  • MRCGP/nMRCGP

Desirable

  • Evidence of postgraduate education and/or attendance at training events that are relevant to the post

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in treating people with health needs that are relevant to the specialist group of patients.

Desirable

  • Experience working with asylum seekers and refugees.
  • An understanding of the asylum system and the particular health needs and barriers this group face.

Skills

Essential

  • Commitment to team approach and multi-disciplinary working
  • Counselling and communication skills
  • Understanding of clinical risk
  • Management and clinical governance
  • Committed to continuing professional development in the area of practice
  • Ability to take independent clinical decisions when necessary and to seek advice from colleagues as appropriate
  • IT skills to enable the use of the electronic patient system and other programmes used in the department
