Job summary

We are recruiting for a full-time Specialty Doctor in Old Age Psychiatry to work alongside a Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist covering the catchment area of Blaenau Gwent in South East Wales. The post will predominantly comprise of community and outpatient work with some inpatient support.

The post will be based at Ysbyty'r Tri Chwm, Ebbw Vale and is easily accessible from either Abergavenny or Newport areas. Ysbyty'r Tri Chwm is a purpose-built older adult mental health unit which houses a 14 bedded ward (Cedar Parc) for the specialist assessment and treatment of dementia inpatients. The ward is co-located with the Blaenau Gwent OA CMHT and Memory Assessment Service where the Consultant, Specialty Doctor, Senior Nurse and team and outpatient offices are also situated.

Local general hospital facilities are provided, one mile away, at Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan, Ebbw Vale. Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny is the nearest enhanced-local general hospital supporting our patients if they become severely physically unwell and critical care hospital facilities are provided at Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran.

Main duties of the job

  • Outpatient clinics for both functional and dementia patients
  • MDT working with OACMHT and Memory Service Team based at Ysbyty'r Tri Chwm
  • Home visits with CMHT and Memory Service MDT colleagues
  • Inpatient support, in addition to junior doctor and consultant

The post holder will be supervised by a full time Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry and supported by full multidisciplinary CMHT and Memory teams and a full-time GPVTS trainee doctor who is predominantly ward based.

The Speciality Doctor will be encouraged to participate in the health board psychiatric medical postgraduate education programme and support medical undergraduate teaching. There are also opportunities to participate in local multidisciplinary older adult mental health training initiatives and other training/teaching opportunities (eg care of the elderly and general medicine).

The Specialty Doctor will be expected to actively participate in regular medical and clinical audit within the service. They will be supported to undertake relevant CPD activities, identified through annual appraisal and job-planning.
