Clinical Fellow in General Paediatrics

Fixed Term Post - 12 months

Start Date - as soon as possible

This is a non-training post equivalent to ST3+ level

Main duties of the job

At Birmingham Women's & Children's Hospital, we require a Clinical Fellow in General Paediatrics to work at middle grade level within the Department of General Paediatrics to start from for a period of 12 months. Paediatric experience is essential. The post would be ideal for a paediatrician with 2-3 years' experience or more who wishes to build on their skills and experience before entering a higher specialist training programme. We would also encourage applications from Paediatric trainees who have or are due to complete specialist training/ achieve CCT and would like to develop their areas of specialist interest before taking up consultant posts. These could include defined sub-speciality interests OR more wider ranging areas including - Safeguarding, Children with medical complexity teams, Quality improvement and Management in wider hospital structure. Fixed sessions for these can be discussed and agreed into the job plan.

Job responsibilities

The General Paediatric Department roles and activities include

  • Assessment of referrals from General Practitioners and the Emergency Department.
  • Inpatient management of all acute and chronic general paediatric medical conditions, including child protection issues.
  • Advice to other services within the Trust about general medical problems, child protection issues, and co-ordination of care for children with complex multidisciplinary problems.
  • Overall responsibility for general medical admissions to PICU whether from the district or elsewhere in the region, in close collaboration with the intensive care medical staff
  • Outpatient management of new and follow up patients
  • High level of education, appraisal, and support of doctors in training, and teaching of undergraduate medical students from Birmingham University
  • There is unparalled opportunity to care for children with a complete range of serious and minor medical illness, psychological and safeguarding issues.
  • High level of consultant support with 2 consultants of the week (3 in winter) and consultant evening shifts for the acute admissions.
  • Out of hours general paediatrics trainees contribute to the hospital at night team covering the admissions or inpatients on rotation with speciality colleagues.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or MBChB
  • Eligible for GMC registration
  • Paediatric training in a structured programme

Desirable

  • GMC Registration
  • MRCPCH or postgraduate qualification in paediatrics
  • Advanced Paediatric Life Support Provider Certification or equivalent

Experience

Essential

  • 2 years experience in Paediatrics

Desirable

  • 6-12 months experience as middle grade
  • UK experience
  • Team leading and Management experience eg. o Governance (audit ,guidelines ) or o Research o QI o Teaching and education

Skills

Essential

  • Paediatric procedures - IV access, Lumbar puncture

Desirable

  • Difficult IV access ( +/-Ultrasound guided ), Long lines

Knowledge

Essential

  • Safeguarding awareness & training

Desirable

  • Level 3 child safeguarding training
