Job summary

Our Consultant nurse led Minor Injury Unit is looking for an enthusiastic nurse who is experienced in triage. Successful applicants must hold a valid Manchester Triage Certificate. This post would also suit those emergency nurses who would like the future opportunity to develop into an emergency nurse practitioner (ENP). Many of our experienced triage nurses follow this pathway.

Our team consists of a matron, consultant nurses, emergency nurse practitioners, trainee emergency nurse practitioners, physiotherapists, triage nurses, health care support workers, receptionists, plus ancillary staff and radiology colleagues who are an extended part of our team. Our service caters for patients with a range of minor injuries, patients who attend who do not meet the unit's scope of practice are redirected to major emergency departments, their General Practitioner or other primary care services.

Main duties of the job

The role requires: triage assessment and prioritising care, redirecting patients to more appropriate services and supporting critically ill or injured patients awaiting emergency transfers. The applicant will be expected to: provide medicines under patient group directions, apply and remove casts and splints, manage wounds including suturing, record ECGs, cannulation and phlebotomy and performing point of care testing.

Applicants should have significant emergency nursing experience in a major emergency department or minor injury setting and be qualified in using the Manchester Triage model.

Applicants must be prepared to work flexibly to ensure that the service is operational form 07:30-24:00 hours.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse Adult or Child with active NMC Registration
  • Valid Immediate Life Support Certificate
  • Manchester Triage Certificate
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Advanced Life Support Certificate
  • Paediatric Advanced Life Support Certificate
  • Improving Quality Together Bronze

Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of safeguarding adults and children including the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards
  • Awareness of Health Board Policies, Procedures and Guidelines

Desirable

  • Awareness of clinical governance and topical issues in health and social care
  • Knowledge and application of research process

Experience

Essential

  • Post registration experience in Emergency Department or Minor Injury Setting
  • Experience in using the Manchester Triage Model
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care
  • Basic IT skills

Desirable

  • Preceptorship and/or mentorship skills
  • Competent at splinting, including the application of plaster of paris
  • Competent at administering medicines under PGD
  • Competence of requesting limb x-rays
  • Competence in venepuncture and cannulation
