Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board have an exciting opportunity. We are looking for an Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Trainer to work as part of a Training Collaborative team alongside Expert by Experience co-trainers to co-deliver the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training for Learning Disability and Autism to our health and care workforce.

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death highlighted the need for health and care staff to have better skills, knowledge and understanding of the needs of people with a learning disability and autistic people.

This is an amazing opportunity to influence how care is delivered by providing health and social care staff with the knowledge and skills they need to make a difference.

You will be joining a friendly, supportive and dedicated team who are passionate about making a difference for people with learning disabilities and autistic people

Please note, due to the ongoing cost reduction programme and restructure underway at SNEE ICB (due to end in Summer 2024), prior consideration for this role may be given to existing staff who are affected by this programme and this role may be removed from the recruitment process at any time.

Main duties of the job

Role models exemplary behaviour in terms of conduct, attitude, performance, when delivering The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism and The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism Trainers Training.

Demonstrates ability to effectively support and co-facilitate the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training with experts by experience.

Plans delivery of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism and The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism Trainers, co-producing elements with external stakeholders as required.

Demonstrates best practice facilitating training.

Employs learning interventions that are learner-centred.

Ensures all the learning outcomes are fully achieved.

Recognises and addresses the needs of individuals and the group prior to, during and after the session.

Appropriately challenges poor practice.

Keeps up to date with current and emerging thinking in health and social care practice, learning disability and autism, laws of consent (UK), The Mental Capacity Act 2005, The Human Rights Act 1998, The Autism Act 2009, Do not attempt cardiovascular resuscitation case law (DNACPR), LeDeR and all elements of the Learning Disability and Autism NHS Long Term Plan.

Job responsibilities

The role is to play a key part in delivering the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training in Learning Disability and Autism to people who work in health and social care across the Suffolk and North East Essex ICS footprint.

The post holder will work as part of an Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Collaborative Team, alongside Expert by Experience Co-Trainers.

The role can be flexible but will involve the need to travel independently to different venues to deliver training.

This training will take place both through online virtual 1-hour sessions and through face-to-face training in groups of up to 30.

Full training and ongoing support will be provided to the successful candidate to enable them to carry out this role and develop their skills.

Person Specification

Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge and experience of a variety of learning and development methodologies and their application, in particular coaching, action learning, and facilitation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the learning cycle and its application.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of learning disability along with current issues, trends and priorities within the social care sector including relevant legislation.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of Autism along with current issues, trends and priorities within the health and social care sector including relevant legislation such as the Autism Act 2009.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, the Human Rights Act 1998, The Equality Act 2010, UK legal valid consent law and DNACPR case law.
  • Knowledge of health and social care sectors and current and emerging trends that constitute best practice in delivering health and social care support.

Experience

Essential

  • Clear experience of proficient and successful delivery of face to face training in health and social care or similar environment.
  • Experience delivering high quality services to people with a learning disability and autistic people in a professional role such as RNLD, OT or social worker, or can demonstrate an equivalent level of skills, knowledge and experience.
  • Has an up to date working knowledge of the fields of autism and learning disability and is familiar with current health inequality issues as identified in the NHS Long Term Plan
  • Has experience leading and developing quality practice in others.
  • Robust experience, understanding and application of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 within in a health and/or social care environment or similar.
  • Robust experience and understanding of the Human Rights Act 1998, the Autism Act 2009, The Equality Act 2010, UK legal valid consent laws and DNACPR case law.
  • Commitment to own professional development.

Qualifications

Essential

  • A relevant teaching qualification such as Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS), Multi-professional support of learning and assessment in practice or an equivalent.

  • Excellent time and project management skills to ensure the training is delivered on time, with all learning outcomes adequately addressed.
  • Proven ability to deliver a wide range of highly effective training and learning interventions to a wide variety of health and /or social care audiences.
  • Skilled in the facilitation of learning through a variety of means related to a deep understanding of differing learning styles and support needs.
  • Ability to give objective, accurate, consistent and timely advice in relation to health and social care learning and development, within the scope of this role
  • Ability to persuade and influence learners attitudes at a range of levels.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Ability to co-facilitate with experts by experience.
  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner as part of a distance-managed team, utilising good organisational skills to prioritise and manage workload.
  • Excellent IT skills including use of PowerPoint.
