Job summary

We are excited to advertise our Staff Nurse Band 5 position for our 14 bed Acute Assessment Unit (Mulberry 1) on our Fulbourn site, with good transport links and free parking. We encourage newly qualified nurses to apply as we thrive to support and develop our future nurses. 12 month preceptorship programmed will be supported.

Our Acute AssessmentWard is part of our innovative and ambitious model of care, known as the 3-3-3 model. Our three wards work collaboratively to enable patients to access the right care at the right time. We have our Acute Assessment Unit (Mulberry 1), where patients stay up to 3 days, our Treatment ward (Mulberry 2), where patients stay up to 3 weeks and our Recovery Unit (Mulberry 3), where patients stay up to 3 months.

Our Mulberry 1 ward provides care for our local population experiencing serious mental illness. We are looking for someone with a commitment to teamwork, a sense of accountability, and an ability to work under pressure.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide quality evidence based nursing advice, support and care for service users with mental and physical health needs and to their carers within a multidisciplinary setting. They will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care, and will have a working knowledge of local, national policies and legislation which govern current service provision.

The post holder will be responsible for identifying and contributing to the training needs of junior registered and unregistered staff and ensure that issues of equality, diversity and rights are dealt with in accordance with good practice and legislation.

  • To be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the evidence-based care required, including health promotion for a named service user/group ensuring it meets Trust timescales.
  • To participate in the setting of quality standards, including the monitoring and reviewing in line with current clinical guidance practice and policy.
  • To ensure the post holder understands and meets their professional role and responsibilities under the Care Programme Approach.
  • To ensure that the requirements of the Mental Health Act 2007 are observed, adhered to and implemented.
  • To promote carer and service user involvement within the service and for its provision. To encourage recovery, discovery and independence, taking into account risk assessment and management.
  • To establish therapeutic relationships with service users, and the implementation of evidence based therapeutic interventions with appropriate boundaries in accordance with Nursing andMidwifery Councils professional code of conduct.
  • To be responsible for the safe custody and administration of medicines inaccordance with all medicine policies.
  • To respect and value the different therapeutic approaches within the multi-disciplinary team but ensure that the agreed philosophy approach is adopted and followed.
  • To ensure that accurate and timely written records are kept which comply with the Trust policy and NMC guidance, reporting on any issues as appropriate.
  • To ensure that they comply with current good practice in informing/updating all members of the multi-disciplinary team, their colleagues, service users and appropriate others of changesinvolving current nursing care plans, progress, mental state and psychosocial factors in line with best practice.
  • To ensure that they communicate effectively with service users and carers, actively listening to establish an understanding of their needs.
  • Empower service users by ensuring that they receive the relevant information about their treatment, medication, available services, advocacy services, ward routines and safety procedures.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse, Mental Health (RNMH) or other specialism relating to post such as Registered Nurse Learning Disability (RNLD) or Registered Nurse Children's (RNC)
  • NMC Registration

Desirable

  • Post Graduate Qualification relating to the ward specialism

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of inpatient services and working as part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Working with people with mental health difficulties/learning disability

Desirable

  • Experience of providing mentorship
  • Experience relating to ward specialism

Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including IT literacy (MS Office).
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Ability to use own initiative to enable contribution to a multi-disciplinary team approach
  • Able to keep calm and respond appropriately under pressure
  • Effective time management and organisation skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team

Knowledge & Understanding

  • Understanding of care planning using Positive Behavioural Support (PBS)

  • Basic understanding of legislation relating to care including Deprivation of liberty, Safeguards Act, Children's Act, Equality Act 2010, Health and Safety Act and the Data Protection Act

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to carry out patient care including manual handling and physical interventions
  • Ability to participate in full rotational shifts
