The salary for this post is in line with Agenda for Change Band 6, which has a current salary range of £39,959 to £48,117 per annum (£23,975 to £28,870 pro rata for 22.5 hours per week)

Main duties of the job
Were working to improve the lives of children under 0-5 and their families in Somerset and youll be a key part of that. You will:
- Lead on the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme as defined within the service specification, identifying packages of care based on the Universal, Targeted and Specialist models of service delivery.
- Provide leadership and supervision to other members of the Public Health Team ensuring you delegate appropriately to other team members and work within somerset Local Authority policies and procedures.
- Take responsibility for the outcomes of the children and collaborate with key partners to address identified public health needs.
- Develop and foster effective professional relationships and networks with families and other key partners.
- Provide families and children 0-5 with a service that promotes their physical, mental, emotional health and wellbeing.
- Contribute to multi-agency early support assessment of children and families and take on lead professional role where appropriate.

Job summary

Job summary
Somerset Council is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and skilled Public Health Specialist to provide strategic leadership for improving mental health and wellbeing across Somerset. This is an exciting new role where you will apply a broad range of Public Health knowledge and skills, such as critical appraisal, analysis and evaluation of data and needs, strategic leadership and partnership working to address and improve all age public mental.
Somerset is a large geographical county with urban centres, market towns and vast rural areas, and it faces a number of important mental health challenges, including the impact of rurality, social isolation, and workforce and economic pressures, and the access to and delivery of services across the county.
The postholder will provide strategic leadership to embed mental health and wellbeing priorities across the county. Additionally, you will work collaboratively with our established Suicide Prevention Partnership, working across local government, health and care providers, third sector and the community to deliver the Somerset Suicide Prevention Strategy 2025-2030, to improve population wellbeing, reduce and prevent suicide, strengthen crisis and bereavement support and embed suicide prevention as everybodys business. As a specialist, you will also play a key role in leading the development, commissioning and delivery of programmes and interventions to improve and raise awareness of public mental health.

You will be educated to masters level or have comparable professional experience with a proven track record of delivering programmes that have had demonstrable impact on health and well-being outcomes. Public Health Intelligence
- Analyse and evaluate quantitative and qualitative data and research evidence from a range of sources to make recommendations and inform decision making which has long term impacts, as appropriate to the area of higher-level practice.

- Provide expert public health advice and leadership and inform an evidence-based approach within ethical frameworks for commissioning and to develop high quality equitable services, across primary, secondary and social care, and across sectors including local authorities, voluntary organisations, in potentially contentious and hostile environments where barriers to acceptance may exist

- Be responsible for the development and implementation of multi-agency long-term public health programmes as required, based on identification of areas of potential health improvement, the diversity of local needs and the reduction of inequalities.
Health Improvement
- Be responsible for designated areas of health improvement programmes. This may include engagement with primary care professionals and community staff to raise awareness and achieve engagement in their public health role.
- Take a senior level leadership role in an area of higher-level practice with local communities and vulnerable and hard to reach groups, helping them to take action to tackle longstanding and widening health inequality issues, using community development approaches as appropriate.
- Provide expert knowledge to ensure effective community involvement with regard to all the work of the organisation including commissioning and prioritising high-cost services and to ensure that policies and strategies are interpreted, developed and implemented at all levels, reflecting advanced theoretical and practical knowledge, in the area of higher-level practice.
