We are seeking caring, compassionate, and committed Health Care Assistants (HCAs) to join our In-Patient Unit team at Erdington Hospice.
As an HCA, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team delivering hands-on, high-quality palliative and end-of-life care. Youll ensure a safe environment for patients and families while being sensitive to their spiritual, psychological, and social needs.
What were looking for
A Level 2 NVQ in Health or Social Care is highly desirable. If you are currently working towards this qualification or can demonstrate a strong commitment to completing it while employed, we would love to hear from you. Please make sure this is clearly highlighted in your application.
Passion for Care: A genuine enthusiasm for delivering exceptional palliative and end-of-life care, with compassion and dignity at the heart of everything you do.
Experience: Previous hands-on experience in a healthcare or similar care setting, showcasing your ability to provide safe, person-centered support.
Competent in English and Maths (GCSE level or equivalent)
Ability to work flexibly across a 7-day rota and occasional multi-site locations
Strong communication skills (written and verbal) and a team player
Basic IT skills (databases, email, Word)

Job summary
At Birmingham Hospice our teams are committed to improving the quality of life for people living with life-limiting conditions, as well as supporting their families and loved ones during one of the most challenging periods they will ever face.
We are currently recruiting two Senior Therapy Support Workers to work within our Therapies Team at Birmingham Hospice. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are team players, dynamic and passionate about palliative care to join our therapy team and the wider hospice team. This post requires the candidate to work across our Inpatient Unit, Living Well Centre service and in the community to support both our Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists.
You will be working within a multi-disciplinary team offering specialist palliative care to our patients. To excel in this role, you will need to deliver therapy interventions with support from the therapy team with a focus on working towards patient centred goals to enable our patients to achieve what matters most to them. Excellent communication skills and a flexible attitude to meeting patients needs are needed to fulfil this role.
Main duties of the job
- You will have experience of working as a Therapy Support Worker with patients in a relevant setting and ideally within palliative or hospice environment.
- You will be patient focused and passionate about holistic care for the palliative patient.
- You will have experience in this field or transferrable skills that can be utilised for this specialist role.
- Preferably have attained advanced communication (certificate) and excellent interpersonal skills and can work flexibly as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- A drivers licence, business insurance and access to a car for work purposes is essential to this role.
You must be able to travel across Birmingham, sometimes at short notice and therefore you will need to be a car owner/driver with access to your own vehicle and hold a current full UK driving licence or have access to a driver.

Job Purpose
Provide support within the therapies team playing a vital role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care across IPU, Living Well Centre and within patients own homes in the community. Ability to analyse and evaluate interventions and to adapt treatment plan and goals accordingly, this will include the use of outcome measures to support clinical judgement. With support from therapies team when needed.
Excellent clinical note keeping, ensuring patient documentation is accurate and up to date.
Compassionate and skilful communication with patients, carers and colleagues. Including people who have cognitive and physical disability, mental health difficulties and/or are experiencing the emotions associated with loss and grief.
Governance
Work within guidelines, policies and procedures including, but not limited to incident reporting, lone working, Information Governance, Infection Prevention and Control, Safeguarding.
Take a positive and constructive approach to learning from good practice as well as incidents or near misses. For example, make suggestions as to improvements in policies and procedures when relevant from own areas of work.

As a key member of the SPUR leadership team, you will spend approximately 60% of your time providing leadership and operational support, helping to develop and inspire our Urgent Support Healthcare Assistants, Urgent Response Nurses and Paramedics. The remaining 40% of your role will be clinical, rotating between triage and face-to-face care, responding to urgent referrals from patients, families and healthcare professionals across Birmingham and Solihull.
Working within a responsive service that aims to assess patients within two hours, you will play a vital role in ensuring patients receive timely, specialist palliative and end of life care, helping them remain in their preferred place of care wherever possible.

As Occupational Therapist and Therapies Lead, you will:
- Provide line management to the therapy teams
- Provide OT assessment, treatment, intervention and advice to babies, children, young people and their families living with life limiting and life threatening conditions in both hospice and community settings
- Provide Occupational Therapy expertise to the care team and advise team members on how to support OT goals within moment-to-moment care, including advising on 24-hour postural management, equipment to support posture and independence in daily living (e.g. sleep, seating and bathing) and support for sensory needs.
- Work in collaboration with the care team to review holistic care needs and contribute to care plans
- Collaborate in the development and communication of a vision for the AHP programme including therapies within Acorns, to increase AHP voice, visibility and impact
- Produce and evaluate qualitative and quantitative data from the services offered to evidence the quality of the AHP services provided by Acorns
- Advise on innovative opportunities and support all relevant departments/ disciplines in their strategies and programmes to maximise service benefits
About You
- Degree/qualification in Occupational Therapy
- Current HCPC registration
- Experience of providing assessment and intervention to children and young people with complex needs
- Experience of leading audit/quality improvement programmes
