Job summary
The Activities Programme Assistant will play an important role within Jewish Cares Community Support team, delivering vibrant, person-centred day services across our general older peoples service and specialist dementia service at the Dennis Community Centre in Redbridge. Working 30 hours per week, Monday to Thursday, the postholder will plan, deliver and support a wide range of meaningful activities and programmes that promote social connection, wellbeing and participation. You will get to know members as individuals and adapt activities to their physical, cognitive, emotional and cultural needs. The role also involves supporting members who may experience distress or changes in behaviour, monitoring wellbeing, providing personal support in line with care plans, supporting volunteers, helping with transport and technology, and contributing to safeguarding and risk management.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for a warm, enthusiastic and compassionate Activities Programme Assistant to join our growing Community Support team in Redbridge. Working across our general older peoples service and specialist dementia service, you will help create engaging, inclusive and supportive days where members feel connected, valued and able to participate. You will support a varied programme of activities, adapting sessions to individual interests, abilities and needs, while building positive relationships with members, families, carers and volunteers. You will also provide practical support where required and work closely with colleagues and external professionals to ensure members can participate safely. Youll work alongside the Senior Programme Assistant and Centres Coordinator to plan, run and support a wide range of meaningful activities and programmes. Youll get to know our members as individuals, understand what matters to them and help create activities that reflect their interests, abilities, culture and needs.
This is a varied, hands-on role where no two days are quite the same. Youll work across both the general older peoples service and our specialist dementia service, helping ensure members experience continuity, dignity and belonging wherever they access our services.
What youll be doing- Supporting and delivering engaging activities and programmes that promote social connection, wellbeing and participation.
- Adapting activities to meet different physical, cognitive, emotional and cultural needs.
- Building positive and trusting relationships with members, families, carers and volunteers.
- Creating a calm, welcoming and dementia-friendly environment.
- Supporting members who may experience distress or changes in behaviour, recognising triggers and responding sensitively.
- Monitoring members wellbeing and reporting changes in behaviour, mood, mobility or engagement to senior colleagues.
- Providing personal support when required, in line with individual care plans and agreed procedures, helping members maintain their dignity, independence and comfort.
- Working alongside colleagues, social work teams, families and external professionals to ensure members with higher support needs can participate safely.
- Supporting volunteers and working collaboratively with the wider programming and Explore teams.
- Helping members access appropriate technology so they can participate in activities both at the centre and at home.
- Supporting safe and effective transport arrangements, including helping members organise Dial-a-Ride, community transport, private hire and public transport.

About youYou will be a qualified and Social Work England registered Social Worker with experience of working with adults in a social care setting. You will have sound knowledge of the Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and safeguarding, together with experience of assessment, care planning, risk management and social work interventions.
We are looking for someone who is confident working independently, while also contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary team. You will have excellent communication, listening, writing, organisation and IT skills, alongside the ability to exercise professional judgement and critically reflect on your practice.
Experience of community or group work is essential. Experience of working with people affected by mental health, dementia, disability, isolation, end-of-life care or other complex needs is particularly relevant. Experience within the voluntary sector or mental health services would be desirable.
Knowledge of the Jewish community would be advantageous, although a willingness to learn about Jewish life and develop your understanding of the community is essential.
Driving requirementAlthough hybrid working is available, due to the geographical coverage of this role, you must hold a full UK driving licence and have regular access to your own vehicle for work purposes. The role involves travel across North East London, Central London, Essex and Southend, including visits within the community and attendance at meetings and services across different locations.

You will provide professional social work support to adults across North East and Central London, Essex and Southend, supporting people to maintain their independence, improve their wellbeing and remain safely within their communities.
About the roleYou will manage a complex caseload of approximately 35 cases (FTE), carrying out holistic assessments, developing person-centred support plans and delivering effective social work interventions. You will work with people experiencing a range of challenges, including ageing, disability, mental health needs, dementia, social isolation, end-of-life care and other complex or co-existing needs.

Partnership working will be an important part of the role. About youYou will be a qualified and Social Work England registered Social Worker with experience of working with adults in a social care setting. We are looking for someone who is confident working independently, while also contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary team. The Michael Sobell Jewish Community Centre provides activities, wellbeing support and community engagement opportunities for older people in our community.
Our centres are also a vital source of respite and reassurance for families and carers, knowing their loved ones are supported, valued and engaged in a warm and inclusive community.
About the roleAs Community Welfare Lead, youll be a key point of contact for welfare and safeguarding matters within our community centres.
Youll support members with a range of welfare needs, providing practical guidance, signposting and referrals, while working closely with colleagues, families, carers and external professionals to ensure people receive the right support at the right time.
Youll also lead on outreach and community engagement, helping to strengthen links with the wider community and encourage older people who may be isolated or facing barriers to access our services.
An important part of the role will be developing and supporting intergenerational activities and projects, creating opportunities for different generations to connect and strengthening our community relationships.
Youll work closely with the Hub Manager, Centres Coordinator and wider Community Services team and will provide supervision to the Community and Welfare Officer.
