This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Neonatologist. This post will be available from December 2026 for a period of 6 months. The duties of this post will be to provide consultant led clinical duties on the Leeds General Infirmary and St James's sites (6 in 18 weeks, alongside the 17 other neonatologists. On call duties are 1:6 weekend (LGI or SJUH) with resident on call night shift cover provided to the LGI. The successful applicant should hold accreditation in Paediatrics (subspeciality Neonates) in the Royal College of Paediatrics or equivalent, and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Applicants should have established skills in Tertiary (level 3) Neonatal Care and it's related specialties. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable. We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our workforce.

To provide weekday Consultant cover and weeknight on call (1 in 6 alternating site) to the Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Leeds General Infirmary and the Local Neonatal Unit at St James's Hospital.

To provide weekend consultant led care to the two regional neonatal units within Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (1 in 6 weekends).

To provide, in conjunction with the existing consultants, supervision of neonatal care on the NICU, Postnatal and Transitional Care wards. This will require working on both Neonatal Units by rotation.

To assist in delivering the induction and training programme for junior doctors. To contribute to the effective training and clinical supervision of medical staff within the Neonatal Service.

To liaise with the Neonatal Outreach Team and community paediatric team to provide planned discharge and follow up of neonatal graduates.

What you will bring to the role Plan, maintain and develop scientific and technical support to diagnostic X-ray imaging, including imaging quality assurance programmes, advice on equipment specification, commissioning new equipment, advice on and measurement of patient doses, and investigation of complex faults that may impact on image quality or patient safety.

Ensure physics input is provided to support the work of Radiology departments. Advise Radiology staff on a wide range of complex scientific, technical and clinical issues relevant to the use of X-ray equipment for patient care. Take operational responsibility for the physics services being managed.

Ensure that instrument quality assurance and quality control programme for X-ray equipment (such as CT scanners and other complex X-ray systems such as that used for interventional vascular radiology) is correctly carried out to required guidelines and standards. Ensure that all imaging and related equipment is functioning correctly.

Ensure that appropriate equipment is available and calibrated, for the monitoring of radiation levels, x-ray parameters and image quality.

Investigate and resolve complex equipment problems. Carry out fault-finding on complex equipment and other complex equipment to determine the cause of subtle or non-reproducible system faults. Liaise with suppliers regarding equipment breakdown, and arrange for the maintenance and servicing of identified items of equipment. Work closely with clinicians, radiographers, technical staff and other physicists for the evaluation and purchase of capital equipment, providing appropriate technical and scientific support. Take responsibility for the acceptance testing and commissioning of such equipment.

Ensure cover is arranged to ensure robust Radiological Physics service delivery.

A 10 month secondment post has become available on J81 Bexley Intensive Care Unit at St James Hospital.

The jobholder will play an essential role assisting the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse with the 24-hour continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of the ward. They will contribute to the provision of professional, clinical, managerial leadership and supervision for the nursing team.

The jobholder is responsible for helping to develop and maintain our ward philosophy, that has the patient at the centre of compassionate safe and quality care delivery. By assisting with managing the administrative and financial aspects of the ward, the jobholder will support the cost-effective use of resources.

As an experienced nurse the jobholder will assist in co-ordinating activities on the ward ensuring effective communication is maintained at all times, providing support to qualified and unqualified nurses within the ward. He/she will play a key role in the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

J81 Bexley Intensive Care Unit

Bexley Wing is a major 12-storey clinical building at St James University Hospital in Leeds primarily housing the Leeds Cancer Centre. It serves as one of the largest and most comprehensive single-site cancer treatment facilities in Europe. Bexley ICU is a 15 bedded multi-speciality unit providing Critical Care for both Intensive Care and High Dependency patients and provides specialist care for Pancreatic, Upper Gastrointestinal, Hepatology, Thoracic, Gastroenterology, Gynaecology, Haematology and Oncology patients.

Adult Critical Care consists of 5 critical care units, 2 at St James’ Hospital (J54 Lincoln ICU and J81 Bexley ICU), and 3 units at Leeds General Infirmary (Cardiac Critical Care, General Critical Care and Neurosurgical Critical Care).

Job Summary

The successful candidate will be a key member of the Blood Sciences management team. Employment on annex 21 Band 7 would be considered for candidates with significant specialist knowledge and relevant experience, who are working towards the required level 7 qualification. You will work on complex systems, carry out dynamic risk assessments, work autonomously as required, organising and rectifying reactive works and carrying out statutory planned maintenance items to ensure maximum availability of equipment to minimize any downtime. The position covers a wide spectrum of responsibility supported by an on-call Estates Manager out of normal working hours. Often it is the first point of call for Estates related issues or emergencies such as fires and floods/equipment breakdowns and, as such, the successful candidate will need to have good communication skills and be able to work under pressure as part of a team coupled with a solid engineering knowledge base.

The role will focus upon making safe first and foremost then working on engineering solutions to enhance and support clinical colleagues in treating patients. The ability to work with other trades, problem solve, interpret work drawings, learn new techniques, undergo training, carry out assessments are all key elements of the role. The role is about being organised, professional and working to the HTM's and other guidance documentation and also providing the necessary supporting documentation/feedback.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Paediatric Nephrology department for 6 months but there will be an opportunity to apply for a substantive role.

The Leeds Paediatric Renal Service provides regional specialist kidney care for children across East Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and the Humber. This service is one of 13 designated services for paediatric Nephrology in the UK and one of the 10 providing a fully comprehensive service including transplantation. The services at Leeds Children's Hospital are based in the renal unit, inpatient bed base on L50 and adjacent haemodialysis unit. This is a shared ward with paediatric hepatology and includes a shared 13 bed base including 8 cubicles (2 with the capacity for haemodialysis). Patients are also routinely cared for on the High Dependency Unit and in Paediatric Intensive care post renal transplant. Children will need to come to Leeds for specialised treatments or procedures which include renal transplantation, acute kidney injury requiring dialysis, insertion of long-term dialysis access and problems relating to long-term dialysis, renal biopsy, specialist imaging, renovascular angiography and treatment and children with complex nephro-urological conditions. This is in addition to the large cohort of children with chronic kidney disease require the input of a large multi-disciplinary team.

Our 17,000 staff ensure that every year we see and treat 1,500,000 people in our 2,000 beds or out-patient settings, comprising 100,000 day cases, 125,000 in-patients, 260,000 A&E visits and 1,050,000 out-patient appointments. We operate from 7 hospitals on 5 sites.

There is an established regional network that includes educational activities including the annual regional network study day to provide educational updates and training educational study day and provision of regional guidelines alongside a network of outreach clinics at 11 other hospitals across the region. Thus, providing shared care for patients and in-line with the principle of providing equity of access to quality care as close to home as possible for a population of children with complex and/or chronic disease (NHS Kidney Care-supported Improving the standard of care of children with kidney disease through paediatric nephrology networks, RCPCH 2011).

Haemodialysis

The haemodialysis unit is co-located with the renal inpatient ward (L50). This is a designated 5 station unit, including an isolation cubicle with a separate entrance for family and patients. Haemodialysis (haemodialysis and haemodiafiltration) is delivered in centre with routine haemodialysis delivered Monday to Saturday (6-day service) with a 7 day/week daytime urgent dialysis cover. The number of children receiving dialysis ranges from 8-12. Leeds is one of the KQuIP (Kidney Quality Improvement project) establishing home haemodialysis and as part of this there is a haemodialysis nursing staff expansion programme including rotational nursing staff from the ward and an nurse educator role.

Peritoneal dialysis

There is an established peritoneal dialysis programme with patient numbers ranging from 4-10. There is urology surgical support for catheter insertion for acute and chronic peritoneal dialysis. There is a training package for carers led by the specialist nursing team with a combination of in hospital and at home training. There is ongoing support from the specialist nursing team at home with electronic access to each dialysis session. There is monthly outpatient review of all patients receiving peritoneal dialysis in our MDT clinic.

Transplantation

There is an active transplantation programme in Leeds with an average of 10 transplants per year, with a current cohort of 65 transplant patients under follow up. There is specialist nursing support for transplant work up and a comprehensive MDT transplant listing programme involving nephrologist, transplant surgeons, immunological laboratory, specialist nurses, psychology and social workers. The transplant programme is supported by the transplant surgical team Mr Masood, Ms Martinez-Lopez and Mr Falconer.

Nephro-Urology

There are close links with the paediatric urology MDT. There is a monthly nephro-urology MDT to discuss complex cases and a monthly joint nephro-urology clinic. There is access to non-invasive and invasive urodynamics and an evolving medical bladders service.

There are a number of specialised clinics including antenatal counselling, regional stone service, Tuberosclerosis clinics and joint rheumatology clinics. As well as specialist renal services, the department also provides secondary referral care for a large range of paediatric nephrology referrals including urinary tract infection, haematuria, proteinuria and problems with incontinence

Outpatient services

In Leeds the paediatric renal service outpatient clinics are based within Children’s outpatients in Martin Wing on Leeds General Infirmary site with a dedicated paediatric play support and phlebotomy service. There are weekly transplant, general nephrology and chronic kidney disease clinics. In addition, there outreach joint clinics across Yorkshire and the Humber based in Airedale, Bradford, Dewsbury, Grimsby, Halifax, Huddersfield, Hull, Pinderfields, Scunthorpe, York (Scarborough).
