Clinical Fellow in Urology

Reference: 162-7815-SURG-A
Job summary
We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for two Clinical Fellows in Urology to join the team at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. This full-time post will be based primarily at our new Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital, with additional cross-site responsibilities at Queen's Hospital.
This post is equivalent to a SHO (ST1-2 level) service post with independent on-call responsibility under consultant supervision. The service will support the appointee in their career progression, with particular focus on meeting the clinical criteria for CCT.
The successful applicant will join a motivated and expanding team and will be expected to complement the existing workforce, working closely with clinical and managerial colleagues to support the reduction of waiting lists and the delivery of high-quality core urology and stone services.
Main duties of the job
Provide safe, effective and compassionate care to patients under the supervision of the Consultant Urological Surgeons, maintaining responsibility for the clinical management of patients within their competence and escalating concerns appropriately.
Contribute to the delivery of a high-quality, responsive urology service across both elective and emergency pathways.
Provide inpatient and emergency urology cover at Queen's Hospital, including the assessment and management of acute referrals and supporting patient flow within the service.
Participate in the assessment and management of elective and non-elective urology patients in inpatient, outpatient and operating theatre settings.
Attend outpatient clinics, diagnostic sessions and elective operating lists, with graduated responsibility appropriate to their experience, competence and service requirements.
About us
We're an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we're proud of and our patients are happy with.
They are benefitting from a new electronic patient record (we were the last acute trust in London to introduce one) and our maternity services have been rated good by the Care Quality Commission.
We operate from two main sites - KGH in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 346,000 people visiting them last year. We're campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen's and get rid of corridor care.
We're proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre, Radiotherapy Centre and Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. We're also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance.
We run a Women's Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub. These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The majority of our 8,400 staff - who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We're proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

Job responsibilities
For further information please refer to the job description and personal specification
The difference between the role of a Medical P.A. and that of a Medical Secretary is the level of responsibility. To undertake a Medical P.A. position, the post holder will need to either:
1. Be the only secretarial member of staff working for the consultant, and hence will be required to cover a wide range of duties incorporating diary management and the co-ordination of all clinical / administrative / academic work.
Or:
2. Take the lead role in the organisation of a consultants clinical practice (including the line management of other secretarial staff) where the size of the consultants practice justifies more than one member of staff to support it.
The post holder will be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive Medical P.A. service. He/she will liaise with all colleagues within the multidisciplinary team, and with internal departments and external agencies to ensure the continuity of patient treatment.
This is a general job description, which may be developed over time to meet the specific needs of the Clinical Unit, in conjunction with the post holder.
