ICU Consultant
North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust View all jobs
Posted 25 day(s) ago
Reference: 262-A-25-7492119-A
Job summary
There are 9 bed spaces, including a cubicle, with current staffing for up to 8 patients, admitting approximately 840 patients per year. There is executive approval for a 13 bedded rebuild. The unit has 9 consultants with daytime and on call sessions in ICU all of whom have ICU as a major element of their job plan. Thus a consultant rota of 1 in 9 with prospective cover operates. The unit has 24/7 cover by consultants with daytime sessions in ICU, with 2 consultants per day - a 'hot week' consultant (to provide continuity) and a 24hour consultant, who is on call.
There is specific clerical time allocated for ICNARC data collection and the unit has a clinical information system (Metavision) which integrates patient observations, medical and nursing notes, prescribing and results systems at the bedside. This has ongoing customisation which has provided the ICU with a wealth of data capture opportunities. The ICU also has a 24/7 band 7 critical care outreach service to facilitate both admission to and discharge from the ICU as well as numerous educational and audit initiatives.
Main duties of the job
An active Critical Care Outreach Service which is delivered by a team of experienced nursing staff. Lead for outreach is Dr Mark Holliday.
As stated above there will be increased cross site working between the 2 ICUs with contribution from CIC consultants to WCH staffing to reflect the high medical demand of the ICU plus the increased need for patient transfer for major surgery at CIC. The provision of 24/7 intensive care consultant led service is a high priority for WCH and is reflected in the move to cross site working and in this advertisement. Resident staffing has been supported by recruitment of Advanced Critical Care nurse Practitioners and the long term strategy is for a dedicated ICU resident on the WCH site.
About us
At NCIC, we have an ambition to deliver outstanding healthcare services to the population of North Cumbria. The Trust is committed to creating a centre of excellence in providing rural and remote healthcare and provides a wide range of community and acute services throughout our county.

Consultant in Acute Medicine
North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust View all jobs
Posted 25 day(s) ago
Reference: 262-A-26-8011446-C
Job summary
Are you considering your next opportunity? If so, we'd love to show you why should consider joining us here in North Cumbria. We're investing into Acute Medicine services, and we can invest in you, too.
There is real scope to shape your role... around what you do best
If you have a special interest in frailty, virtual wards, hospital admission avoidance, front-door streaming or ambulatory care, we would actively welcome a conversation. We are flexible in how roles are built and happy to tailor job plans to align with your interests, experience and development goals. Whether you are passionate about clinical leadership, pathway development, education, or system working across primary and secondary care, there is space here for you to make a meaningful impact.
This is an opportunity to join a service with momentum... and ambition
You will be joining a team that is honest about the challenges of acute care, but equally committed to doing things better: for patients and for staff. Our vision is clear: the right patient, in the right place, at the right time, led by the right clinician. If you're looking for a role where your expertise is valued, your ideas welcomed, and the service is genuinely evolving rather than standing still, we'd encourage you to get in touch for an informal discussion.
Main duties of the job
New leadership and investment at North Cumbria Integrated Care has created an opportunity for 5 new Acute Medical Consultants who will be integral to the redesign of our Acute Medicine services.
New funding will mean we can facilitate early senior decision making, expand Medical SDEC facilities and advise from the point of referral in our new single point of access Hub.
Working for NCIC, you will benefit from:
- An enhanced SPA plan with 3 SPAs made up of 1.5 for core SPA, and the other 1.5 for your specialist interest.
- Excellent research, teaching and innovative opportunities from our partnerships with the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine and our regional providers in the Great North Healthcare Alliance.
- A leadership development pathway for Consultants, right through to Executive Medical Director.
Investment Into Our Future
The Trust Board has recently approved a £4 million investment into our Urgent and Emergency Care services.
The investment will support a modern Acute Medical service, including a significantly expanded and purpose-built Medical Same Day Emergency Care unit, with protected consultant presence and strengthened multidisciplinary working.
Our future model prioritises early senior review, ambulatory pathways, frailty-focused care and better use of virtual wards and community services. This is about delivering safer care, reducing unnecessary admissions, and improving across the whole hospital... not firefighting in Emergency Department corridors.
About us
Our CEO, Trudie Davies, and Executive Medical Director, Adrian Clements, would love to hear from you to discuss your future career in North Cumbria. To arrange an informal chat, please contact Sally Rushton on [email protected] for Trudie and Julia McClune on [email protected] for Adrian.
At NCIC, we have an ambition to deliver outstanding healthcare services to the population of North Cumbria. The Trust is committed to creating a centre of excellence in providing rural and remote healthcare and provides a wide range of community and acute services throughout our county.

Established in 2006, we are one of the UK’s leading independent providers of community health and care services, working with health and care commissioners and communities to transform services with a focus on experience, efficiency and improved outcomes. We deliver and transform adult and children community health services, primary care services including urgent care, sexual health, dermatology and MSK services as well as adult social care and wellbeing services. Across England, we support communities of many millions and directly help more than half a million people each year - guided by our simple values: we care, we think, we do.
We’re committed to equal opportunities and welcome applications from a broad, diverse range of people who want to join our team. We’re a Disability Confident Committed company, so we work to provide facilities, work environment adjustments and technical solutions to be as inclusive of everyone.
While it doesn’t happen often, sometimes a role is very popular, and we’ll need to close it earlier than the date we’ve shown here. If you’re keen to join our team, we’d love to hear from you so please apply as soon as you can.
