Reference: 2347320
Job summary
Are you passionate about ensuring our ex-British Armed Forces - Navy, Army and RAF service personnel have access to excellent mental health care? The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise from the Nation that those who serve or have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly ensuring they are not at a disadvantage due to their Veteran status. A Veteran is an individual who has served one or more days in the military, and it is this group of people that Op COURAGE works with on a holistic level.
Op COURAGE offers support to Veterans within the geographical patch (Birmingham, Black Country, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin) experiencing mental health crisis who require support in engaging with their local primary and secondary services. We do not aim to replace already existing services (e.g crisis teams, CMHT, GP management) but works to build links with these services and advocate for Veterans who may have faced difficulty in engaging or accessing the appropriate support.
Are you skilled in engaging, assessing, helping to support clients who may struggle to engage, present with complex difficulties, and manage dynamic risks? This is an exciting opportunity for a Mental health nurse to join the "bigger-picture" development of NHS Veteran mental healthcare through the Op COURAGE urgent care pathway.
Main duties of the job
- Be responsible for Veterans on the caseload with identified, complex needs.
- Liaise with local services, including secondary mental health and primary care services and support engagement with these services to ensure care is being provided.
- This is a community-based service, providing a high intensity support package of care to Veterans in times of crisis, across a large geographical area (West Midlands, including Birmingham, Black Country, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin.
- The post holder will work within the wider veterans service caseload providing co-ordination of assessment, planning, and implementation of care to veterans and carers within the defined West Midlands Region.
- Provide professional advice and support to the veteran and their families, as well as other agencies including crisis teams and the police.
- working within the Veteran's care pathway, alongside non urgent pathway (previously known TILS and CTS).
- Appointments are made using a combination of communications; in person, digital and telephone.
- This role works to enhance already existing services such as CMHTs, crisis services and charitable organisations rather than replace them - the aim is to improve veteran-service engagement and ensure that Veterans are able to fairly access the appropriate support they require, and are not at a disadvantage due to their Veteran status.
About us
Welcome to Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. Our 4000 clinical and support staff help us to improve mental health wellbeing and meet the needs of the 70,000 people we serve each year. We provide a range of mental healthcare services across Birmingham and Solihull, as well as specialised services nationally. We also offer medical, nursing and psychology training and are proud of our international reputation for both research and innovation.
Our population is culturally diverse, characterised in places by high levels of deprivation which create an increasing demand for our services and a necessity for us to make sure everyone can access the help they need. We are a team of compassionate, inclusive and committed people working together to provide excellent care to support our community. The advertised post is a thyroid fellowship and is suitable for those who want to expand their skills and sub-specialise in thyroid and parathyroid surgery. It is expected that the successful candidate will support the department with achieving the targets for urgent cancer referrals by seeing the patients on the "2-week referral" pathway for head and neck/thyroid cancer. All of the thyroid surgeons undertake other head and neck/airway surgery and there will therefore be exposure to this, although it is not the focus of the fellowship.
Major Head and Neck resections (including laryngectomy, complex airway surgery, head and neck resections requiring free flap reconstruction, input of thoracic surgeons and skull base surgeons) are performed at QEH.
The proposed weekly timetable for the thyroid fellowship (subject to change / negotiation) is as follows, with two flexible sessions for revalidation / admin. In addition, there are quarterly genetic thyroid oncology clinics, approximately quarterly tertiary parathyroid operating lists, and other ad hoc theatre sessions during the week which the Fellow will be encouraged to attend, as well as opportunities for weekend operating/clinic work.

Reference: 2345874
Job summary
There is an opportunity for a motivated individual to join the ENT department at University Hospitals Birmingham from 4th August 2027 for 12 months.
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is the largest multi-site Trust in the UK. The ENT Department works across four sites: Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH), Good Hope Hospital (GHH) and Solihull Hospital (SHH).
The Birmingham Thyroid Surgery Fellowship provides an excellent opportunity to work within a high-volume supra-regional university teaching hospital (the largest thyroid surgery unit in the UK) with a multidisciplinary focus. Our aim is to provide comprehensive training in the surgical management of a wide range of thyroid and parathyroid conditions. The fellowship offers exposure to the medical and surgical management of malignant and benign thyroid cases, including advanced differentiated thyroid cancer, medullary thyroid cancer, severe thyrotoxicosis and retrosternal disease. In addition, the ENT department provides a large volume of parathyroid operations, including primary and tertiary hyperparathyroidism. Outpatient commitments include specialist thyroid, thyroid oncology, genetic thyroid oncology and 2 week wait clinics. Our department has close connections with University of Birmingham and from an academic perspective, the department is currently involved in national clinical trials and there is plenty of opportunity to undertake research during the fellowship.
Main duties of the job
The ENT Department has 30 full time equivalent consultants and 3 part time consultants. Within the ENT department at UHB, there are currently 10 consultants specialising in Head & Neck and thyroid surgery. The pan-Birmingham thyroid MDT is one of the largest thyroid MDTs in the country. The department performs around 500 thyroid/parathyroid operations per year.
The middle grade tier within the department consists of 9 middle grade doctors at the QEHB site, including 4 fellows (Thyroid, Head & Neck, Otology/Skull base and Rhinology/Anterior Skull base) and 5 residents. At the HGS site there 3 Associate Specialists, 3 residents and 2 speciality doctors. There are 8 tier one doctors at the QEHB site and 6 at the HGS site.
The appointee will be expected to undertake cross-site working with a formal job plan, with most elective work based at QEHB and some sessions at BHH. All major head and neck elective theatre sessions will be at QE Hospital, with some tertiary parathyroid operating at BHH.
The job plan will include a commitment to clinic, theatre and out of hours on call duties. Time will be given for admin and supporting professional activities. The appointee will be expected to attend and contribute to Clinical Governance, teaching and audit within the department. Access to a car is important for on call purposes.
Fellows will be expected to teach junior doctors, nurses and other allied health professionals during ward rounds, outpatient clinics, emergency situations and theatre sessions.
