Job responsibilities
This role requires strong collaboration across a wide range of stakeholders to ensure alignment and effective delivery. Internally, you will work closely with ICB colleagues, managers, and senior leadership to drive shared objectives.
Externally, you will engage with national and regional teams at NHS England, as well as Integrated Care System (ICS) partners, including portfolio leads, Local Authorities, Provider Collaboratives, and Place-based teams. They act as a key interface between strategic planning and operational delivery, ensuring that the ICB's vision and objectives are fully embedded across teams, partners, and programmes.
A core part of the Clinical Lead's role is to drive delivery of the ICB plan, ensuring alignment with national policy, local strategies, and partner priorities. This includes overseeing progress against the ICB's core "must-do" requirements while maintaining a sharp focus on longer-term transformation and system development. The Clinical Lead ensures that delivery is underpinned by robust governance, effective performance management, and strong collaboration across providers, local authorities, and the voluntary sector.
The Clinical Lead also leads and influences continuous improvement across the systemembedding a culture of learning, innovation, and accountability. They are responsible for ensuring that improvement methodologies are applied consistently, that data and insight drive decision-making, and that barriers to delivery are identified and addressed swiftly. Job description
Job responsibilities
The Department has developed an indicative job plan to support the recruitment of a Consultant Respiratory Physician with a specialist interest in Lung Cancer and COPD. The post is organised on an 18-week rolling rota, providing a balanced mix of inpatient, outpatient and specialist activity whilst promoting consultant wellbeing through an equitable distribution of clinical commitments. The majority of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) is delivered through the department's Consultant of the Week model, where two Respiratory Consultants provide daily consultant-led ward rounds across the 35-bed Chestnut Respiratory Ward, together with specialist in-reach to the Emergency Department (ED). The role also includes outpatient clinics, specialist services, multidisciplinary team meetings, procedural sessions and participation in the General Internal Medicine (GIM) on-call rota.
The consultant job plan operates over two alternating weekly schedules within the 18-week rota. Week 1 comprises an average of 7.25 Programmed Activities (PAs) of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.25 PAs of Supporting Professional Activities (SPA), whilst Week 2 comprises 7.75 DCC PAs and 1.25 SPA. Both weeks include a predictable allocation of 1.1 PAs for General Internal Medicine (GIM) duties.
The rota has been designed to ensure an equitable distribution of workload, enabling consultants to alternate between ward-based, outpatient and specialist activities, balancing clinical demand while supporting continuity of care and staff wellbeing. These job plans are indicative and based on the current establishment of eight substantive Respiratory Consultants. A personalised job plan will be agreed with the successful candidate. All job plans are reviewed annually in accordance with the Trust's Consultant Job Planning Policy and may be amended by mutual agreement to reflect evolving service needs.
